Biography

Judith Roby, daughter of William Roby of London, married Francis Anthony, brother of Derrick Anthony and son of William Anthony.[1] [2]

Just two references to Judith Roby have been found. One is in a self-published family genealogy book. The other is in the heraldic visitations conducted in the 16th century.

Charles L Anthony's Genealogy of the Anthony Family lists Judith and Francis as parents of Francis Anthony (1550-1623), Doctor of Physick. This Anthony Genealogy is unsourced and the author admits himself in the book's preface and introduction that he was not entirely certain of the accumulated pedigree's accuracy.

The intent of Heraldic Visitations was to register coats of arms for nobility, gentry and boroughs and also to record pedigrees. They are considered as an "upper class census" and a source for historians and genealogists. [3]

The indication from the Visitations of London, 1568 is that Francis Anthony (1550-1623), Doctor of Physick was instead the son of Derrick (not Francis and Judith). See Derrick's profile for further information.

Research Notes

Birth and death, dates and places
Both documents with reference to Judith mention her as daughter of William of London, so it is reasonable to assume Judith was also from, born in, London.

No other information has been located regarding Judith's life (or her husband Francis' life) so it is purely a guess to suggest in this WikiTree profile that Judith died in London. It's a more likely guess to suggest she died in England. There is also nothing to suggest a year of death for her and nothing off of which to base an estimated death year.

Estimated Dates
It seems there is consensus that Francis Anthony, William Anthony's grandson, was born in 1550. If his father was 30 years old when he was born, his father was then born in 1520. The same assumption again can yield that William was born in 1490.

Since the 1568 Visitation references only Derrick Anthony as a son of William while the 1634 Visitation update additionally includes Thomas and Francis, it could therefore be assumed Derrick was the oldest, the most successful, or the most visible. Let's assume he was the oldest, so Derrick would then have been born in 1520. Assume then that Thomas and Francis were born 2 years apart with Thomas older than Francis simply because he is on the left side of the Visitation entry we have today. This would yield estimated birth years of 1522 and 1524 for Thomas and Francis respectively.

Continuing this thinking further, assume Judith Roby was born the same year as spouse Francis Anthony and that William Roby, Judith's father, was 30 years old when Judith was born. So, with this, estimated birth years are 1524 for Judith and 1494 for William.

Other couples with names Judith & Francis Anthony
1. The year is off with respect to this profile's Judith, but there is a record in the U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 source for a Judith Roby marrying a Francis Anthony (b. 1575) in England. Perhaps this is the Francis & Judith (Roby) Anthony in Charles L Anthony's family history. [4]

2. There's a reference to Judith Anthony in Colonial Families of the USA, 1607-1775 first published in 1912. This reference is certainly pointing to the same family and has interesting material (hints), but it also appears to be self-contradictory. For instance, page 14 discusses Francis Anthony (b. 16Apr1550). The end of first paragraph ending on the page, reads

The name of his wife by his first m. is not recorded. He m. (secondly) 23d Sept. 1609, at the Church of the Savoy, Middlesex, Elizabeth Lante, of Trinity Church Minories, London, widow of Thomas Lante, Gent.

Then, skipping to the last paragraph on the same page under the sub-heading Issue by 1st m. where the text again goes into some detail about the same Francis Anthony's will, the description includes "mentions wife, Judith Anthony". So, is this work trying to say Francis Anthony b. 1550 had 2 wives (1st wife unknown; 2nd wife Elizabeth Lante, also her second marriage) or 3 (adding Judith Anthony)? [5]

This work does offer the notion (error?) that Francis & Judith (Roby) Anthony mentioned in Charles L Anthony's work and the 1634 London Visitation is not a Francis & Judith from Derrick's generation but from the following generation. (i.e. Francis Anthony b. 1550). There is full set of other candidate wives to sort out for him, so per the Mackenzie publication Judith can be added to that set.

3. Again, the year is off with respect to this profile's Judith, but there is a record in the Church of England Parish Registers, 1538-1812 source for a Judith & Francis Anthony with child Francis Anthony who died as an infant (b. ~1620, d. 17Apr1620) in London, England. His burial location is St. Bartholomew the Great, City of London, London, England. [6]

4. There is also an Elizabeth Anthony, child of Judith & Francis Anthony, baptized 06Oct1619 at St. Bartholomew the Great, London, England. Though not yet proven or sourced, Elizabeth may be from the same family as mentioned in the prior paragraph. [7]

Other women named Judith Roby with father William
In the Derbyshire, England, Select Church of England Parish Registers, 1538-1910 there is a Judith Roby born to William & Mary Roby baptized 17Feb1794 at Aston upon Trent, Derbyshire, England. [8]

Finally, for what it's worth, and not a match for this profile's Judith, there is a Judith Anthony who was buried 28Mar1685 at St. Mary's, Whitechapel, London, England. This is found in the England, Select Deaths and Burials, 1538-1991. Further research is needed to determine whether her maiden or married name is Anthony and if married, whether her husband's name was Francis. [9]

Hi Dick, Judith Roby according to the Gen of the Anthony family was married to Francis son of William, Not John. See Roby-21 for sourcing and bio. This Judith needs to be disconnected from John, have her birth changed and merged with Roby-21. Objections
