Notes

Note N37Email to Sheila Walsh 24/918 Hi Sheila, Great to hear from you. Yes, it certainly looks like there were two people by the name Patrick Roche in the same area at the same time; very confusing lol. I have always thought of them as 1) the “Knockaclare” Patrick, son of Thomas and 2) the “other” Patrick, son of Michael. My connection is to the Knockaclare one:Patrick (Paddy) Roche (1904 - 1975)1st cousin 2x removedThomas Roche (1866 - 1930)Father of Patrick (Paddy) RocheThomas Roche (1815 - 1892)Father of Thomas RochePatrick Roche (1864 - 1916)Son of Thomas RocheAileen Mary Roche (1895 - 1954)Daughter of Patrick RocheSylvia Aileen Mendez (1914 - 1994)Daughter of Aileen Mary RocheDavid George TaylorYou are the son of Sylvia Aileen Mendez I’ve been striving to separate the records of the “other” Patrick from my one. I had always assumed that the Michel Roche listed as his father o the marriage certificate was a transcription error for his father Thomas. I think it’d be worthwhile for both of us if I lay out my documentary and thinking chain for the Knockaclare Patrick below – please feel free to critique or prove me wrong in any way:-(see birth certificate attached) Born 12 Nov 1904 at Knockaclare to Thomas & Johanna (nee Stack) Roche, farmers-1901 census for the Knockaclare Roche family http:/www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000879549/ doesn’t show Patrick but does show his parents and 6 of his older siblings-1911 census for the Knockaclare Roche family http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002490592/ shows Patrick as 5yo, one of 11 children-24 Apr 1926 marriage to Mary Stack at the RC Church in Lixnaw, giving the abode of both as Lixnaw, and Patrick’s father as Michael Roche. The abode and father are alarm bells for this record, hmm. This may be the “other” Patrick…-The next records I have are a series of newspaper announcements of his death 15 Jan 1975 and burial 16 Jan. The burial record http://193.178.30.14/KerryBurials/burialrecords/Kilshenane_1_1969-2010_0011.pdf shows his age at 76 in 1975. This gives 3 birth years so far 1) 1904 as per his birth cert, 2) about 1906 as per the 1911 census and 3) about 1899 as per the burial record – I’ve gone with the birth certificate date. These clippings mention a wife etc. but no children and oddly, no first name for the wife. The notices indicate that she was the sister of Dan & John Empor and my cousin John Stack (confusing, eh!) in Ireland has picked up that she was called Mary but I can’t find any suitable marriage record. This Mary, by the way, seems to have been the last Roche to live in the Lighthouse at Knockaclare, formerly the Roche family farm. Unless Mary Stack had pre-deceased Patrick and he then remarried to Mary Empor (also called Emperor) (and this doesn’t seem to have happened) then I now finally believe that the “other” Patrick is the one who married your Mary Stack. I hope this helps, Sheila, or at least makes you equally confused as I am! Any comment or correction welcome. All the best with your research.
