John Roche was born in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland in 1844. He was the son of William Roche and Ellen (Fox) Roche. He worked as a dealer.
He married Bridget Mahon in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland in 1875. He had five children with her.
He passed away age 51 in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland in 1890.
John Roche lived all his life in the tenement houses of the Liberties area of Dublin, Ireland. Poverty was endemic in the tenements in the 19th century, and tenants moved among the houses frequently, often living a number of families to a house. Many children died young of disease and malnutrition, chiefly tuberculosis. The tenements were demolished in the 1960s and 1970s, and none of the houses he lived in survive today.
