"A friendship founded on business is better than a business founded on friendship." - John D. Rockefeller Sr.
John Davison Rockefeller was born July 8, 1839, in Richford, Tioga, New York, United States, to William Rockefeller and Eliza (Davison) Rockefeller.
Personality: John D. Rockefeller Sr. was known for being a very serious man, but around personal friends and family, they knew him as being a funny guy with a great sense of humor. Rockefeller knew that in his line of work all serious and playful acts have positive and negative reactions. And he knew how to handle all of this very well.
Influence: One of the main influences in his life came from a Baptist Preacher. When he was a little boy the preacher gave him advice. The advice was to make as much money as possible. Then give away as much money as possible. This led to Rockefeller's career as a philanthropist.
Philanthropy: Business was a big part of Rockefeller's life. But as big as that was, philanthropy was still as important to him if not more important. From the start, he gave 10% of his paycheck to his church. Later in his life he gave 80 million dollars to the University of Chicago. After he gave possibly his biggest donation of 250 million dollars to his own foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation. In total it is said that he had given away over 550 million dollars in his life.
John passed away May 23, 1937, in Ormond Beach, Volusia, Florida, United States and is buried in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, at Lake View Cemetery. [1]
