John was the son of Josiah and Mary (Hungerford) Rockwell
John married Elizabeth Chappelle and had ten children
He was tragically killed when a new horse attached to a lumber wagon jerked forward, throwing him to the ground and breaking his neck - he left Elizabeth to raise ten children alone
He is buried at Eaton Village Cemetery, Eaton, Madison, New York, USA
He is mentioned in "History of Madison County, State of New York", by Luna M. Hammond Whitney, p 306 in reference to a Wagon Shop which was converted to a school by Alpheus Morse, Lyman Gardner, Calvin Morse and John M. Rockwell
