Biography

Spencer Roden was the oldest son of Elder Levi Roden (abt.1779-1852) (b. 1779 in Chester county South Carolina and died in Tippah Mississippi on the 15th of April 1852). Levi Roden was a Justice of the Peace, a school teacher and a lay minister for the Baptist church. His first wife was Salina Melvina (Blank) Roden (abt.1780-abt.1842) their children were:

Levi Roden's second wife was widow Elizabeth "Betty" Isbell Rutherford (1799-1856)

The Jacob Pruitt family were neighbor's of Levi Roden and his family in Roanne county Tennessse, the famiies traveled together to Alabama. Jacob and Nancy Agnes Pruitt bought land and built a plantation in Walker county, and in 1824 Spencer W. Roden married Rebecca Pruitt. After the Indian removal act of 1830 Spencer & Rebecca decided to move 200 miles away and buy cheap land in what would later be called Dekalb county Alabama. Spencer's father also decided to buy cheap land in Mississippi and built a plantation.

Both Spencer Roden & Rebecca Pruitt were from families who were well to do and had large land holdings before the Civil War.

Records indicate Spencer W. Roden eventually served as a Trustee on the School Board of Education in 1835, indicating his interest in school affairs as a community leader in Rodentown, a small town near Crossville Alabama.

Spencer & Rebecca had thirteen children; seven of their sons served in the Civil War and three died during the War. Spencer died at the age of 55 leaving Rebecca a widow for 52 years..

Spencer Roden's wife is buried in Liberty United Church in Rodentown, the land was donated by Stephen Naler son of John Naler & Margaret Roden & his wife Eliza in 1865, Spencer's burial in 1856 was probably on private land.
