Biography

William Miles Rodden was born about 1857 in Shoal Creek, Cherokee County, North Carolina. He was the son of Thomas F. Rodden and Nancy C. Rodden. Thomas was born in Halifax County, North Carolina about 1826 is 34 years old. His wife Nancy was born in McMinn County, Tennessee about 1821 and is 39 years old.^[1] William has a sister and four brothers. They are Eliza J Rodden, born about 1847 in Polk County, Tennessee; George W Rodden, born about 1850 in Polk County, Tennessee; John B Rodden, born about 1852 in Cherokee County, North Carolina; Thomas M Rodden, born about 1858 in Cherokee County, North Carolina and Joseph M Rodden, born in July 1860. In 1870 William is 14 years old.^[2] His family is now living in Marion Twp., Sebastian County, Arkansas. William's father, Thomas, is now 44 years old. His Mother Nancy has been enumerated as "Mary" C. Rodden and is 47 years old. John, now 18 years old, George, now 20 years old and Eliza, now 23 years old are no longer living at home. Thomas M. is 12 years old, Joseph M. Rodden was born about 1860 in North Carolina and is 10 years old and Andrew J Rodden was born about 1862 in North Carolina and is 8 years old are still living at home. In 1880 William Miles Rodden is married to Janie or Jinney (unknown). They are living in Marion Twp., Sebastian County, Arkansas and have a 4 month old baby, Benjamin F. Rodden born in Feb 1880 in Sebastian County, Arkansas.^[3] There are several other Rodden families living near them. William's brother John B. and Dara Rodden and their three daughters.^[4] John is 25 years old. William's brother George W. Rodden and his wife Susan and their son and daughter.^[5] George is 30 years old. His family lives in the household next to William Miles and John B. lives on the other side of William. William's father, Fifty year old Thomas F. Rodden and his wife Mary C. Rodden live on the other side of William Miles with their sons Thomas M, 22 years old; Joseph M., 20 years old and Andrew J. Rodden, 18 years old.^[6] In 1900 William Miles and Jinney Rodden are living in Huntington Twp., Sebastian County, Arkansas.^[7] They now have five children in their home. Benjamin is now 19 years old, his sister Ora J Rodden is 17 years old, born in Arkansas about 1883; Charles C Rodden is 16 years old born in Arkansas about 1884; Their sister Jessey Rodden, born in Arkansas about 1887 is 13 years old and Thomas F Rodden, born in Arkansas about 1890 is 10 years old. On 15 Aug 1901 Ora Rodden married Walter R Sweet in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma.^[8] On 6 Apr 1902 Benjamin F. Rodden (Frank) married Bessie Honey in Sebastian County, Arkansas.^[9] They were both residents of Huntington. Sometime before 1910 William Miles and Jinney's daughter Jessey Rodden married Robert Lee Hamilton. In 1910 they have a 1 year old son, Roy Lee Hamilton, born about 1909 probably in Jim Fork, Sebastian County, Arkansas.^[10] By 1910 Jinney and William Miles son Thomas M. Rodden and his wife Katie are living in Rogers Twp., Sebastian County, Arkansas.^[11] They have 10 children. It appears that William Miles missed the 1910 U.S. Census. Jessey Mae (Rodden) Hamilton passed away 29 May 1919 in Hartford, Sebastian County, Arkansas. She was survived by her husband Robert Lee Hamilton and two daughters; Elizabeth and Lorene Hamilton. In 1920 Miles Rodden shows up on the census again living in Jim Fork Twp., Sebastian County, Arkansas. He and his wife, enumerated as E.C. Rodden, are living alone and are both 63 years old. Miles is working in the coal mine. William Miles Rodden does not appear on the census after 1920. There is a death record on Ancestry for Miles Rodden who passed away in Sebastian County 12 Jan 1928.
