Biography

John Roddy was born ca 1791, in Tennessee[1]. He was the son of James Roddy and Ann Cowan.

He was a private in the War of 1812.[2]

He married Elizabeth Lane (~1790-1838) on May 29,1815 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.[3] Children:

  1. Calvin Roddy (1821-1870)
  2. Samuel Roddy (1822- aft. 1880)
  3. Joseph Roddy (1824-1870)
  4. Rebecca Roddy (1827-1916)[4]
  5. Ellen/Elloner "Nellie" Roddy (1829-1901)
  6. Locky Jane Roddy (1834-1900)

He was living in Blount county, Tennessee in 1830 with 3 male children and 2 female children, on the 1830 Census.[5]

He married Ritter/Kitter Gounds (1818-1860), on January 18, 1839 in Knox County, Tennessee.[6] Children:

  1. Martin Van Roddy (1840-1904)
  2. Eliza Roddy (1841-)
  3. John Roddy (1847-)

He and Kitter lived in Blount County, Tennessee, where he was a farmer. In the home with them were Rebecca-23, Martin-10, Eliza-9, and John-3.[1]

He passed away in 1850, as his will was probated on December 14, 1850 in Blount County, Tennessee. [7] He was on the November 1850 Census.

Will

I John Roddy do make and publish this is my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all other wills by me at any time made.
First I direct that my furneral expenses and all my debts be paid as soon after my death as possible out of any moneys that I may die possessed of or may first come into the hands of my Executor.
Secondly I give and bequeath to my wife Kitter Roddy the third part of my lands during her lifetime...
Thirdly I give and bequeath to my children, Samuel Roddy, Rebecca Roddy, Ellen Roddy, Martin Roddy, Eliza roddy and John Roddy all my real and personal Estate lands tenements goods and chattels and including the land that I gave to my wife turing her lifetime to be equally divided between them at my death and at the death of my wife.
I have given my son Calvin Roddy and my son Joseph Roddy all that I alowe them and they have no part in this my Last wiill and Testament this 16th day of December 1850. my hand and seal.
