Benjamin was born on 15 Sep 1806 in Amherst County (the portion which would later become Nelson County in 1807). He was the son of Charles Rodes and Jane Hopkins.
On 22 October 1840, Benjamin married Helen Bullet (Hopkins) Rodes. They were blessed with several children.
Benjamin had a prosperous plantation. The 1860 census lists a value for his real estate at $11,250 and his personal estate at $4,000.
Benjamin utilized slave labor. The 1860 slave schedule shows him holding 4 slaves. From November 1862 to January 1863, one of Benjamin's slaves, Frederick, was impressed by agents of the Confederate government to work on fortifications near Richmond, Virginia. Benjamin received $16 per month for the 60 days that Frederick worked.
Benjamin's wife, Helen, died in 1869.
Benjamin passed away in 1898.
