Biography

Matthew was the son of Patrick Rodgers and Mary Sheridan
Baptism: 26 August 1883, Holy Trinity R. C. Church, Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, England
1901 Census he was at St Edwards Reformatory in Essex, listed as a scholar with his occupation as shoemaker, all the boys at the reform school seem to be being trained in manual trades such as tailoring, shoe making, gardening, painting or baking.
He joined the North Staffordshire Regiment in 1902, enlisting for 6 years.
In 1908 he married Mildred Elizabeth Ranford at Gloucester, All Saints, Gloucestershire, England.
His baptism record has a notation of a church dispensation for marriage to a non Catholic, the date of the dispensation is 24 or 27 April 1912, 4 years after the marriage.
By 1911 he was living at 21 Grove Street, Nantyffyllon Maesteg, South Wales and working as a Colliery Labourer Below Ground.
