Biography

Rowland Rodgers is a part of US Black heritage.

Rowland Cameron Rodgers was born on the 4th March 1917, in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States, the younger son of Eugene Ricardo Rodgers, senior and Blanche Bona Cabey.^[1]

On the 6th January 1920 the Rodgers family was living at West 163rd Street, Manhattan. Home at the time were Eugene Sr, a porter at a club, his wife, Blanche, and their children: 9-year-old Eugene Jr, 6-year-old Mildred, 2-year-old Rowland, and the baby, Genevieve, and also a roomer, 30-year-old West Indies-born Helen Lefevere, a house servant in a private home.^[2]

On the 1st June 1925, Rowland has miraculously been transformed into an 8-year-old daughter named Rose, living with her family at West 163rd Street, Manhattan, New York. Others home at the time were his parents, Eugene senior, a porter in an office building, and Blanche, his siblings: Eugene junior, Mildred, and Genevieve (her name rendered as Genevia), and a lodger: North Carolina-born Walter Katte (or Katto), a 21-year-old porter in an office building.^[3]

On the 7th April 1930 the Rodgers family was living at West 163rd Street, Manhattan, New York. Those home at the time were Eugene Sr, a carpenter (building), his wife, Blanche, their children: the now 20-year-old Eugene Jr, married, a musician in a dance orchestra, Mildred (16), Rowland (13), and Genevieve (10), and a lodger, 24-year-old North Carolina-born Walter Katto (or Katte), a porter for an optician's store. No mention is made of where Gene junior's wife was at this time.^[4]

On the 4th April 1940 the Rodgers family was still living at West 163rd Street, Manhattan, New York. Home at the time were Rowland, a porter in a drape factory, his father: Eugene senior, now a private music teacher, and his sisters: Mildred (newly employed), and Genevieve, a Government registrar file clerk.^[5]

Before the United States actually joined the war effort that had been ongoing since 1939, Rowland enlisted in the army on the 22nd October 1941, at Camp Upton, Yaphank, New York.^[6]

Rowland married Dorothy Glorita Escallier on the 14th June 1947, in St Andrews Episcopal church, New York.^[7]

Rowland Cameron Rodgers passed away in February 1984, aged 67 years. His last listed place of residence was Flushing, Queens, New York.^[8]

Research Notes

Either Rowland married twice, the second time to Jane Y Wilson, in 1982, and had a child the following year, named for himself — or he and his wife Dorothy Escallier had had a son they named for his father, and the child born in December 1983 was Rowland Cameron Rodgers III, a grandson.^[9]
