Frederick Roe was born in County Durham, England.

Frederick Aloysius Roe was born in Stockton on 7 March 1882 and was the fifth son of George Roe and Lettice Elizabeth Smith. ^[1]

On the 1891 census, Frederick, aged 9 years, is living at 16 Millbank St, Stockton, with his parents and siblings: Arthur (20 years), John (17 years), William (15 years), Edith (13 years), Alfred (11 years) and Florence (7 years).^[2] On the 1901 census, Frederick, aged 19 years, is living in the Commercial Inn, Norton Rd, Stockton, with his parents and siblings: Arthur (30 years), Edith (23 years), Alfred (21 years) and Florence (16 years). Arthur is a barman and Frederick is a house painter.^[3]

Frederick married Margaret Jackson on 8 September 1906 and they had two sons.^[4]
