Stanley 'Stan' Robert Rofe was born on 30th May 1933 in Richmond, Victoria, Australia to John Robert 'Jack' ROFE and Esma Iris COSGROVE. [1]
He was a prominent radio and music industry personality in Australia. He gave the name "Molly" to Ian Meldrum and was the first DJ in Australia to broadcast a Rolling Stones track.
He received the ARIA Special Achievement Award in 1994, and was inducted into the Music Victoria Hall of Fame in 2015.
He passed away on 16th May 2003 in Carlton, Victoria and is buried in Fawkner Memorial Park with his mother and step-father.[1]
I remember Stan from the Clyde Hotel in Carlton during the latter years of his life. Our regular Saturday night dinners are still memorable for the laughter, stories of the Melbourne music scene, and the company. They became such a highlight of our week and so well entrenched we received a shout-out from Molly Meldrum during one of his segments on "Hey, Hey, it's Saturday".
Vale Stan.
