Research Notes

Although the memorial plaque at the burial site of Robert Rogers, Jr. states that he was a signer of the 1835 Treaty of New Echota, that information is incorrect. The Robert Rogers, Jr. buried in this cemetery was the grandfather of Oklahoma humorist Will Rogers, but was NOT a signer of the 1835 Treaty of New Echota. The Robert Rogers (1804-1858) that signed the treaty was a Methodist minister and never came West. He remained in Georgia and is buried there at Duluth. There is a connection, however, between the two Rogers men. The Robert Rogers (1804-1858) who signed the treaty was the son of John "Nolichucky Jack" Rogers and Sarah Cordery (sister to Lucy Cordery mentioned above).

Some sources that state Robert's father was Robert "Bob" Rogers, an Irish-Scotsman who came to what is now West Virginia around 1800 to trade with the Indians.

Several sources that insist that Robert's father was John Roberts, who married Sarah Cordery (Lucy's sister). Some think John was Robert Sr's brother. There are also several sources who list John as Captain John Rogers and Alcey Vann's son.
