Biography

Cross of St George
John Rogers was born in England.

Captain John Rogers, the first of this family in Virginia, was born about 1620, [1] a subject of the Kingdom of England. Transported to Virginia 18 April 1638. [citation needed]

He made his mark for cattle in Northumberland Co. in 1652. [2][3] He purchased 250 acres in Northumberland County from James Claughton on 20 Jan. 1652/3 and on 13 Sept. 1654 took out a patent for 50 acres on the south side of Claughton's Creek adjoining this land and also for 250 acres adjoining. He became a justice of Northumberland County in May 1655, was a captain in the militia, and was a vestryman of Chicacone Parish. On 1 May 1665 he took the appointed oaths as Sheriff for the ensuing year. On 30 Nov. 1656 Capt. John Rogers repatented the 300 acres he had originally patented in 1654. He added another 200 acres on 31 Aug. 1657 and on 9 Jan l662/3 repatented this land and his 250 acres originally patented in 1654. [3]

The name of his first wife Ellen is shown on the tombstones of both husbands of their daughter Elizabeth (Rogers) Keene Banks at Cypress Farm, Northumberland County. Before Sept. 1668 he married his second wife Anne (______) Temple Clay, widow of John Temple and Francis Clay. [4][5] Northumberland County Court 8th of September 1668 - Whereas Mr. JUSTINIAN GERRARD, who maryed ye Relicte of Mr. WILKS MAUNDER, deced., did exhibite an Accot: against Capt. JOHN ROGERS, who maryed ye Relicte of Mr. FRANCIS CLAY, for nineteene hundred & fifty pounds of tobacco & caske for goods delivered to yt. valew, & Capt. ROGERS did exhibite an Accot. against ye sd. Mr: GERRARD for fifteene hundred eighty & nine pounds of tobacco & caske for goods to ye sd. valew; It is ordered yt: both parties doe retourne to each other ye like goods in kinde in ye same condicon as received by ye last of Janry. next[5]

Know all men by these presents that I John Rogers of Northumberland in the Colony of Virginia Gent. for diverse good causes and consideration as me here unto moving and especially for the natural love and affection that I have unto my children do freely and absolutely give unto my daughter Katherine Rogers one cow calf about six' months old colored red marked a Floure - de-lyse on the left ear and over holed on the right. To Elizabeth Rogers one cow calf aged five months old colored brown marked a Floure-de-Lyse upon the left ear and under holed and over holed on the right. To John Rogers one cow calf about three months old colored black marked a Floure-de-Lyse upon the right ear and over holed and under holed on the left. To have and to hold the said calves with their future female increase to them the said Katherine, Elizabeth and John Rogers remain truly forever in witness where of I have here unto set my hand the 20th of July 1654.

One month later, the court addressed the conflict between the Onawmanient and Isaac Allertaon. The commissioners received a report from a delegation (made up of George Colclough, John Rogers, James Hawley, William Presley, and William Nutt) that it had commissioned to negotiate with between the two parties. On February 6, the delegation had concluded an agreement with Peckatoan, the werowance. The Onawmanient accepted Allerton’s presence “so long as the Land (whereon he liveth already cleared) be useful, Provided that no more Housing be there built than what is now uppon it and to keep his cattle and Hoggs on the other side of the Machoatick River.” The Indians had dropped their initial demands and sought to contain Allerton’s expansion.[10]

27 June 1665: Northumberland Co., Virginia Colony, Cloud Tulos was granted a King's patent for 100 acres of land in Northumberland County, Colony of Virginia, on June 27, 1665 by Sir William Berkeley, Knight Governor. The patent was granted for the transportation of two persons, Dorcus Hinton and John Rosse (Roffe), and the land was described as being on the Chicacone River in Northumberland County and bounded by the lands of Robert Lick, Captain Rogers, Mathew Rodham, M.Flint and John Kent. [11]
