Biography

Elemuel Rogers was born in Canada in about 1811. His first wife was Olive Bradley, who died in 1863. After her passing he remarried to Armeda Rebecca Tuck on 13 Dec 1865. The family them briefly moved to Green, Monroe, Wisconsin. However, they soon returned to Ontario.

Note N143According to the Canadian census Elemuel Hadley was born in Upper Cana da (1811) where he married Olive Bradley. (Note during these days Uppe r Canada was the name for all of the territory of Canada west of Quebec t o Lake Michigan. Lower Canada was east of Upper Canada.) Elemuel was a carpenter and may have built ships as Haldimand is close t o Lake Erie. [ The ship building part is is a family tale not yet prove n - In other documents he is listed as a "Yoeman" an occupation title f or land owner/famer.] Elemuel was married to Olive Bradley in 1935 and had 5 children. They a ll migrated to Wisconsin, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Usually making s tops along the way of several years in states. From Elemuel's second m arriage registration it may be that his father?s name as "William" and h is mother as "Mrs. Rogers?. [Rats! not much help finding his mother]

Vern- 30 Nov 2006 the 1851 Canadian census has Elemuel Rogers living wi th Olive his wife and John and William his sons in Haldimand district. A ccording to the Census he was born in Canada. Elemuel is 41, Olive 36, J ohn 16 and William 12. Elemuel worshiped with the Church of England an d Olive was a Methodist. He is listed as a Carpenter. The next perso n in the census is a James Rogers with his wife Mariah (?). May be rel ated to Elemuel. I have found no information about brothers and sister s of Elemuel. From weddings and the witnesses I find Joel Rogers, Jame s Rogers, Olive Rogers...

Vern June 2007 - Have spent a couple of days exploring an ideas about E lemuel and his parents; who were his parents, where was he was born, an d where did he die. I also had a theory that Elemuel's parents or grandparents were "Loyali sts" during the revolutionary war period and fled to Canada to not be c aught between their new county and their allegiance to the English crow n. What I found--- Nothing directly related to Elemuel. There are many Ro gers in the Loyalist movement both as members of the militia and a Loya list's making claims to Britain for reparations after the US Revolution . There may be a connection but there is also a generation at least b etween their possible movement to Canada and Elemuel's birth in Upper C anada. This makes the connection difficult. Searching for Rogers in N ew England before 1770 reveals many of them living in the area. Some a re directly related to Thomas Rogers, a Mayflower passenger. Further d ocumentation of these Rogers clans may make the connections. Simple An cestry.com search do not reveal an Elemuel Rogers.

I searched the Haldimand Twp records, Land and Probate records, for Ele muel or other Rogers and found none that included Elemuel or his childr en. There are a few, 5 or 6, Rogers in the Haldimand District but none o f the documents, mostly Land transfers, I examined included a reference t o Elemuel and his family. The cemetery records available on LDS Film _ ________ also had many references to Rogers but none that connected wit h Elemuel.

Previously I had identified his marriage to Olive Bradley and his prese nce in Haldimand, Northumberland for the 1851 census. They are not in t he 1871 Canadian Census. Olive (Bradley) Rogers died in 1863 in Haldim and, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada so Elemuel was still in the area. T he next residence for Elemuel is in Monroe, Green, Wisconsin in the 187 0 Census. He is living there with Armeda (25 years old) and Emma (15 Y ears old) Rogers in one household. Elemuel's oldest son John Elemuel R ogers lives in the same enumeration district of Monroe, Green, WI. Joh n E. is married and lives with his wife Mary (Bends) and children Ida a nd Willard. Both John and Elemuel are listed as carpenters. Elemuel m ust have moved between 1865 and 1870.

Further research in the records of Haldimand Twp, Northumberland, Ontar io, Canada turned up a marriage record of Semuel Rogers ( Later confirm ed that Semuel is Elemuel) and Armeda Rebecca Tuck. I get my result fr om an index of the original records as created by the Canadian Genealog ical Research Library from FHS Film 1,030,064. From other data in the i ndex, birthplace and age I believe this is Elemuel marrying a second ti me. This explains the presence of Armeda Rogers in the 1870 US Census i n Monroe. Elemuel married Armeda 13 Dec 1865, two years after Olive di ed. They are married in Simcoe County, Ontario. John and Mary then im migrate to the US in 1866 (US Census of 1900). I attempted to associat e these families with local churches filmed by LDS with no success. Th ey were not found as members of the Episcopal Church or any other in th e area that have record at the FHC. John and Mary bends and there dau ghters and son move to Nebraska and Texas.

Another bits of information that implies Olive Rogers maybe a sister of E lemuel are: Elemuel is a witness when she marries David McCarty Elemuel's family live close to the David McCarty's family in Haldimand, N orthumberland, Ontario in the 1851 Canadian Census. When Elemuel, Armeda, Emma are found in Monroe,Wisconsin in the 1870 US C ensus David and Olive are living there also.

After the US 1870 Census Elemuel cannot be found in the 1880 US Census o r in the Wisconsin, Iowa, or Nebraska State Census's of 1885. Back in C anada thee is no Elemuel in 1871 or 1881 Census. John, Mary, Ida, and M innie are accounted for in the 1900 US Census living in Omaha, Douglas, N ebraska. I think Elemuel probably went back to Canada prior to Emma' s wedding. But they disappear from the records. They are not in the 1 871 Canadian Census. Also what happened to Armeda? I find Armeda as a witness to the 18xx wedding of her brother Emma Rogers goes back to Colbourne Twp, Haldimand County and marries Al bert Hall on 10 Dec 1874. When did she leave? She is not in the 1871 C anadian census. Would she go back to marry, knowing Albert Hall from 1 866, 8 years earlier when she was 11 years old? Maybe she returned to C anada with Armeda or go back to live with another Rogers or Olive Bradl ey relative? There are 6 children from Emma and Albert; maybe one of t hem could provide insight in this area.

The Census records of 1900 and 1910 state that John left Canada in 1866 . He had married Mary and had his first Child Ida by that time. John p robably went directly to Monroe, Green, Wisconsin as his second child W illard was born in Wisconsin in 1869. John/Elemuel and families do no t appear in the 1880 US Census.

What is the significance of Elemuel's middle name Hadley (Handley)? He p assed it on to two of his sons.

Misspellings of Elemuel are common; Lemuel, Elemial, Semuel, and Lemia l have been found. A good example is the 1870 census which has him in M onroe, Green, Wisconsin. According to the Canadian census Elemuel Hadle y was born in Upper Canada (1811) where he married Olive Bradley.

For John's wedding the minister spelled Elemuel Rogers as Lemuel Rogers , twice. He is identified as living in Manvers, Haldimand county.
