Joseph Robert Rogers was born on 7 February 1858 in Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, to Oscar Rogers and Almira Bolin. [1][2] His father was an 1/8 Cherokee mixed-blood. Joseph was an original enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation[3][4]
Joe served as a United States Marshall in Indian Territory. He was once seriously wounded by the accidental discharge of a gun while he was on duty in Claremore guarding funds to be used for an Indian payment. [8] He at one time had a store at Catoosa. Later, he had a drug store in Adair. In 1899 he and his wife settled on a farm near Nowata.[9]
He died on 5 July 1920 and is buried at Nowata Memorial Park, Nowata County, Oklahoma.[10]
