Thomas Rogers was born in Newport, Shropshire, England.
Thomas was baptised at Newport, Shropshire on 8 July 1827. He was the son of shoemaker Thomas Rogers and Elizabeth Townsend.[1]
Thomas was recorded with his mother and stepfather at Sand Hole, Newport in the 1841 census (His surname was misrecorded as Roberts). He was working as a butcher's apprentice, a trade he likely picked up from his stepfather, George Cornmell.[2]
In the 1851 census, he was recorded at Sand Bank with his mother and stepfather. Thomas was now a butcher.[3]
Thomas married Emma Moreton on the 25th of February 1856 at Newport, Shropshire. [4][5]
In the 1861 census, Thomas was recorded at 3 St Mary Street, Newport as a butcher and publican.[6]
In the 1871 census, Thomas and his family were recorded on Stafford Road, Newport, Shropshire. With them was Emma's 71-year-old father, John Moreton (see notes).[7]
In the 1881 census, Thomas and Emma were again recorded on Stafford Road, Newport, Shropshire. Thomas was recorded as a coal office clerk, 16-year-old daughter Emma, a dressmaker, and 14-year-old son George, a page.[8]
Only two of Thomas and Emma's children would survive to adulthood - Ann and George.
Thomas was buried in Newport, Shropshire on the 5th of January 1890.[9]
Research Notes
Thomas is only recorded as publican on 1861 census - in other sources he is recorded only as butcher. But he appears to have been the landlord of the Rose and Crown for a time (mid 1860s).
Witnesses at marriage are Henry Ward, Ann Johnson and John James (John James appears as witness in other surrounding entries so is likely linked to church not family).
'John Rogers', a 71-year-old brazier, is recorded with the family in the 1871 census as the father of Thomas. However, his father's name is given as Thomas in both his baptism and marriage records. This was likely a misrecording of Emma's father, John Moreton, who was recorded as a brazier at the marriage.
