Biography

Ralph Rogers served in the United States Civil War.
Mustered out: Oct 09, 1861
Side: CSA
Regiment(s): Company I, 9th Texas Infantry (Maxey's) (Young's)

Ralph Rogers was born January 22, 1842 in Gainesboro, Tennessee to Clayton Rogers and Elizabeth Brooks .

Ralph Rogers is listed in the 9th Texas Infantry Confederate States Army Roster: Rogers, Ralph, age 19, born about 1842, Pvt., Co. I, enlisted 9 Oct 1861 at McKinney, Collin Co., TX. His company participated in the Battle of Shiloh (April 1862), Bragg's Kentucky Campaign (Aug-Oct 1862), the Battle of Murfreesboro (Dec.31-Jan2), and the battle of Chickamauga (Sept. 1863). He was sick with yellow jaundice (hepatitis) when the battle broke. After the battle, he went to the hospital at Tazewell, GA for a month. He got a furlough for 30 days to go to Sarepta, MS, to visit relatives (Isaac S. Rogers and family). While he was there he joined the Masonic Lodge and learned the ritual from William Spencer Hudson. Mr. Hudson’s war-time diary was transcribed and edited by a great-grandson, Weldon Hudson of Erath County. Ralph Rogers is mentioned five times. He then got a discharge from a Board of Army Physicians. His Regiment listed him as AWOL. He made his way back to Texas on mules, on horses, and on foot, arriving at his parents' about the first of July, 1864. The trip took about six weeks and he didn't get well for two years.

After he recovered from hepatitis, Ralph went to Marlin, where he operated a store beginning in 1867. He married Elizabeth Potts in 1875 and raised four children: Charles Wilkins "Charlie", Edna (Rogers) Keller, Lily (Rogers) Edmonds, and J. Ralph Rogers. While he was away on business, the store burned, bankrupting him. Ralph then leased land to raise cotton and sold fruit trees for Crocker Nursery, travelling to surrounding farms to sell the trees, often spending the night and bringing news of the community. J. Ralph Rogers, recalled that his father, Ralph Rogers served as a Deputy Sheriff in Falls County. He would ride off alone in pursuit of a criminal. His family might not see him for several days, but he always returned with the prisoner.

Ralph filed for his Civil War pension, retired, and on January 2, 1902 moved his family to Dublin in Erath County to be near his married daughter Edna Keller He remained in Dublin with his wife until he died in 1833 at the age of 91.

The 1930 Census of Erath Co. TX, Justice Precinct 2, Dublin City Ward 2, sheet 6A dated April 11, 1930 lines 16 and 17 lists Ralph and Elizabeth L Rogers on Harris Street. He is 88 and she is 75, having been first married at ages 30 and 17. Ralph was born in Tennessee and Elizabeth was born in Missouri. They owned their house valued at $900, which was not a farmhouse. Both of his and her parents were born in Tennessee. Neither immigrated or was naturalized, both spoke English, and he is listed as a Civil War veteran.
