Biography

William was born in Plymouth in 1840, the second of five children of John Rogers and Ann (nee Ivey). He lived with his parents until his marriage.[1][2][3]

William married Prothesia at the Register Office in Plymouth in 1861. There is no information provided as to the ceremony used but the Registrar has crossed out that the marriage was conducted "by me" and substituted "before me" so it may well have been a non-conformist marriage. At the time he listed his occupation as a bookseller and his residence as 11 St Andrews St, Plymouth. Ellen Rogers, his younger sister, was one of the witnesses to the marriage. Since his father was a newsagent, bookseller may indicate he worked with his father.

William and Prothesia migrated to South Australia, arriving in Adelaide on board the "Trevelyn" on 21 Mar 1866 from England. (departed UK 15 Dec 1865). They brought with them their daughters Maud and Violet. Maud died on the voyage, aged 3, of scald. There were 12 children by his marriage to Prothesia, the other ten being born in Adelaide.

William was brought out under a government scheme to encourage skilled and semi-skilled labour. He paid a 10 Pound deposit for the journey, much higher than most. It appears he may have specialised in decorative plaster, such as ceiling roses and cornice work, since his 2 eldest sons had this specialisation as plasterers. It seems likely that he taught them their trade. I have a small level with his initials on it (the glass bubble is set in plaster). Apparently it was common to make these as part of an apprenticeship.

The family lived at Mile End in Adelaide, then Eliza St, Norwood to 1877. From 1878 to 1888 the family lived at Charles St, Norwood, a house owned by William. One of these properties is understood to have had an orchard at the back, where Charlie (Rupert Charles) broke his nose after falling out.

According to oral tradition, William was a strict disciplinarian. William became ill in about 1885 with "Phthisis Debility", a wasting condition which would probably be diagnosed as pulmonary tuberculosis today. It may have been as a result of, or exacerbated by plaster dust.

The whole family moved to Fitzroy, Melbourne in 1888. William died shortly after at the new family home, 41 Freeman St, Fitzroy. His married daughter, Violet Box, was the informant for his death and gave her address as 46 Holden St Nth Fitzroy.

He was buried on 2 Oct 1888 in the Melbourne General Cemetery VIC.

He left an Estate valued at 101 Pounds 6 shillings (a life insurance policy) and debts of around 4 Pounds to 2 bakers in Melbourne and Adelaide and 10 Pounds to his daughter Violet Box (borrowed).
