Herbert was born in 1907. He is the son of Herbert Rogers and Ethel Lamont. He was born in New Zealand, but his family returned to Australia when he was quite young and he would have probably had little memory of his time there. His father enlisted in the AIF when he was about 8 during WW1 and died when he was about 10. At some stage early in his life he changed his surname to Nichol. His mother remarried when he was about 12.
In his early life he appears to have worked as a bicycle manufacturer where he was a partner in a variety of firms.[1], [2] He seems to have travelled to New Zealand and to Tasmania.
In 1934, he married Jean Edwards at Preston, Victoria. He was living at 2 Osborne St, Preston at the time. This marriage was to produce at least 2 children - a son, Raymond John in about 1935 and a daughter Faye Delores in about 1939.
He served in the Australian Military Forces (as a Private VX46010) on 22 Jul 1940 and the AIF from 11 Dec 1941 (as a Corporal VV144375) in WW2. He served in the 1st Australian Ordinance Port Detachment and was discharged on 29 Oct 1945.
In 1953, he was bankrupt.[3] He had been a cycle trader.
He died in 1971 in Preston, Victoria, aged 63. His occupation at the time was shipping clerk. His normal place of residence was 92 Rennie St, Thornbury, Victoria.

YOUNG TRADER
Shows Enterprise
One of the youngest and most enterprising men in the Victorian cycle trade is Mr. H. G. Nichol, managing director of the Panther Cycle Works Pty. Ltd.
Twenty - seven years old, he began his early career as a lad in the "trade" working at various metropolitan and suburban houses. For a while he severed his connection with cycle matters and travelled in New Zealand and Tasmania. Two and a half years ago he opened up the "Panther" cycle business, and after a while formed the present company, of which be is director.
Before long he extended the firm's activities, and now, apart from the head office at Z77 Smith Street, Fitzroy, there are branches at 312 Bridge Road, Richmond, and 125 Nicholson Street, Footscray. At the head depot there is a complete assembling and enameling plant in the factory adjoining. Mr. Nichol said that the aim of his firm was not only produce but to "deliver the goods."
Several leading professional and amateur cyclists are now associated with the "Panther" stable.[4]
