Biography

Elizabeth Rogers was baptized December 26, 1609 in Watford, Northamptonshire, England.^[1][2][3] She stayed behind in Leiden when Thomas and Joseph Rogers came over on the Mayflower. A poll tax in 1622 records the family, including Elizabeth, living in the Over 't Hoff quarter of Leiden.^[4]

It is thought that Elizabeth came to the Plymouth Colony with her mother, sister and brother John about 1629 or 30, as Governor Bradford said that "the rest of Thomas Rogers's came over and are married and have many children".^[5] However, Bradford failed to name these "others" and there are no records, other than John's, in New England proving who these "others" were. We know that John Rogers came. The possible others besides Alice his wife, were his two daughters Elizabeth and Margaret.

Who did she marry?

Samuel Eddy? "It has been speculated that the daughter Elizabeth came to Plymouth and married Samuel [1] Eddy, since the latter was granted land at Plymouth on 3 June 1662 reserved for “the firstborn children” of the colony or their parents. As Samuel did not in his own right qualify on either count, it is possible that his wife Elizabeth was a daughter of Thomas [1] Rogers,"^[6] but there also some points against this determination, mainly that Samuel was the brother-in-law of Thomas Savory.^[7]

Robert Rodway? Watford was the parish of Elizabeth's birth. There was a marriage recorded there. "1635 -- Jul Robertus Rodwai and Elizabetha Rogers." ^[6] Did Elizabeth return to England and marry or is this just a convenient coincidence?

Disputed Relationships

There is no record of the name of the wife of Walter Woodworth and there is no documentation that Elizabeth Rogers, the daughter of Thomas Rogers, was ever married to Walter Woodworth, so he has been removed as her spouse.

Elizabeth Daniel, author of Thomas Rogers, Pilgrim and Some of His Descendants, in 1980 stated, "Whether Thomas Rogers really had a daughter Elizabeth at all is a matter of theory. There are records in Leyden, Holland, that suggest that two daughters lived there with their mother, but there is no absolute proof. Whether one or both of these possible daughters ever came to America, we don't know...” The above-shown baptism and additional sources show that this information is out of date.
