Biography

Elizabeth Rogers was baptized December 26, 1609 in Watford, Northamptonshire, England.[1][2][3] She stayed behind in Leiden when Thomas and Joseph Rogers came over on the Mayflower. A poll tax in 1622 records the family, including Elizabeth, living in the Over 't Hoff quarter of Leiden.[4]

It is thought that Elizabeth came to the Plymouth Colony with her mother, sister and brother John about 1629 or 30, as Governor Bradford said that "the rest of Thomas Rogers's came over and are married and have many children".[5] However, Bradford failed to name these "others" and there are no records, other than John's, in New England proving who these "others" were. We know that John Rogers came. The possible others besides Alice his wife, were his two daughters Elizabeth and Margaret.

Who did she marry?

Unknown?

Samuel Eddy? "It has been speculated that the daughter Elizabeth came to Plymouth and married Samuel [1] Eddy, since the latter was granted land at Plymouth on 3 June 1662 reserved for “the firstborn children” of the colony or their parents. As Samuel did not in his own right qualify on either count, it is possible that his wife Elizabeth was a daughter of Thomas [1] Rogers,"[6] but there also some points against this determination, mainly that Samuel was the brother-in-law of Thomas Savory.[7]

Robert Rodway? Watford was the parish of Elizabeth's birth. There was a marriage recorded there. "1635 -- Jul Robertus Rodwai and Elizabetha Rogers." [6] Did Elizabeth return to England and marry or is this just a convenient coincidence?

Disputed Relationships

There is no record of the name of the wife of Walter Woodworth and there is no documentation that Elizabeth Rogers, the daughter of Thomas Rogers, was ever married to Walter Woodworth, so he has been removed as her spouse.

Elizabeth Daniel, author of Thomas Rogers, Pilgrim and Some of His Descendants, in 1980 stated, "Whether Thomas Rogers really had a daughter Elizabeth at all is a matter of theory. There are records in Leyden, Holland, that suggest that two daughters lived there with their mother, but there is no absolute proof. Whether one or both of these possible daughters ever came to America, we don't know...” The above-shown baptism and additional sources show that this information is out of date.

FWIW, Robert Rodway is not listed in Susan Hardman Moore's Abandoning America.

My thought is that Elizabeth should be detached from any husbands. Then show full info about the two possible husbands in her bio, and add a new wife Elizabeth to Robt. Rodway with what facts are *known* about his wife and a link on that profile back here. Unless or until her marriage is proven or at least accepted by the Mayflower Society, I don't think a speculative husband is wise on the daughter of a Mayflower passenger. The most recent info I find is what's in the 2000 Silver book on Rogers, which states:
Eugene Stratton speculates in Plymouth Colony, Its History & People, 1620-1691, p. 288, that she might be the Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Eddy.

There is no mention of being the wife, speculative or not, of Robert Rodman. Just my 2¢. Is there any scholarly Rodway source? I see Stott's speculation, is there more?

I agree, Anne. Elizabeth as Samuel Eddy's wife seems somewhat unlikely. As is shown on his profile (and in GMB 616) his wife is just as likely to be Elizabeth Savory, and with more justification. As for being Rodway's wife, I would think there'd be more evidence, such as a listing in Susan Hardman Moore's Abandoning America, which unfortunately I don't have.

The article and information from Watford is here

I think all the speculation is because there are no records, to prove anything. The marriage to Rodway is based on the fact that there is a record for a marriage between two people of the name in a good timeframe. The marriage to Eddy is based on the fact he married an Elizabeth ___ and was granted land at Plymouth on 3 June 1662 reserved for “the firstborn children” of the colony or their parents.

The marriage and the place and date of death are connected. If she married Eddy, then she died where and when Eddy died. It is a question of where she spent most of her life. I don't have the research on Watford, so I don't know why the return to Watford was thought plausible. Also related is the claim by some that Alice and Margaret died in Leiden (based on what sources?). If so Bradford would have to be taken as including John and Elizabeth in "the rest of Thomas Rogers's", which is the more plausible reading anyway.

I believe that since there are two very possible marriages for Elizabeth, that neither of the husbands should be connected. They should both be linked in the bio. Thoughts?

Except for her place and date of birth, this Elizabeth seems to be entirely associated with the Stratford Rogers family. It is easiest to change the birth info and keep her with the Stratford family.

This Elizabeth Rogers seems to be the same as Rogers-14 only here has the wrong Thomas Rogers as father. Elizabeth probably came to America. Some speculate that she married Samuel Eddy, but here marriage, and location and place of death is speculative.
