Biography

This profile is part of the Payne Name Study.

Mary A. Rogers was born on 8 Feb 1768 in South Carolina (British America).

Mary (15) married Moses Mannon Payne (~19) (born in Virginia about 1764; died in Blount, Alabama, United States about ~22 Nov 1848), son of Isaiah Payne and Ann Williams, on 4 Feb 1784 in Orange, North Carolina, United States.[1]

From THE ROGERS REGISTER [2] the following excerpt was taken from Page 6:

2-1 MARY ROGERS (5643) - B: 17__; D: March 8, 1849, Blount Co. Ala. She M: April 2, 1784, Orange Co. NC; Moses Payne (5650), B: 1764 "along the seacoast between Maryland and North Carolina, as my father was moving to NC the year 1764".

Moses (5650) D: November 22, 1848, Blount Co. Ala. His son-in-law, John Richey (5657), was the administrator of Moses Payne's (5650) estate. Records of Huntsville Ala., show John (5657) received 0.47 for 17 years, 8 months, 18 days pension "due me from the 4th of March 1831 to the 22nd day of November 1848".

A certificate in Blount Co. Ala., is payable to John Richey (5657) for the benefit of Moses Payne's (5650) "only surviving children".

This record also shows Moses (5650) had a brother named William.

Apparently the deposition for a pension was given on March 30, 1835, and this shows Moses (5650) had lived in Orange Co. NC, "since the War"; had lived in the Pendleton Dist. of SC; moved to Jefferson Ala., and finally to Blount Co. Ala., and believed him to be age 71.

The places of residence for the children reflect the year 1835 when the deposition was given.

Therefore, Moses (5650) and MARY (ROGERS) Payne (5643) had at least:

3-1 MARGARET PAYNE (5651) - B: 1785; no doubt named for her grandmother, she married Mr. Farley (5656) and was of Tuscaloosa Ala.

3-2 ISAAC PAYNE (5652) - of Pontatoe Co., MS

3-3 NANCY PAYNE (5653) - M: August 19, 1821, John Ri chey (5657) and they were of Blount Co., Ala.

3-4 CYNTHIA PAYNE (5654) - married Mr. McMahan (5658) and was of Texas 3-5 JANE PAYNE (5655) - was of Texas As stated in the deposition above, Moses (5650) had lived in the Pendleton Dist., and this is borne out by the 1790 SC census where he is listed next to HUGH ROGERS (5646) and had had a daughter and a son by then. ....

Mary died on 29 Aug 1852 in Blount aged 84. She is buried in Payne Cemetery, Lowndes, Alabama, United States.
