Roena (aka "Rocina" or "Roene") Rogers was born on 28 June 1822 in Warren County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Levi Rogers, b: ca. 1788 in New York or Vermont, and his wife, Sarah "Sally" (Chandler) Rogers, b: 1795 in Woodstock, Windham Co., Connecticut. Levi Rogers and Sally Chandler had married in 1815 in Windham County, Connecticut, but soon thereafter moved to Chandler's Valley, Warren County, Pennsylvania, where the first 7 of their 10 children were born. The community was named for Sally Chandler's family, among the earliest settlers there. Roena Rogers was their 4th child. She was about 9 years old when the family migrated west, first to Missouri, then to central Illinois.[1]
Roena Rogers was married and widowed 3 times in her 86 years.
Marriage #1: to Clark Bonine, 5 Feb. 1843, DeWitt County, Illinois[2]
She met her first husband, Clark Bonine, a recent widower with 5 small children to raise, in DeWitt County, Illinois. When they married on February 5, 1843, she was 21 and he was 27 years old. Clark Bonine had been raised as a Friend, or Quaker, but had been "read out of Meeting" when he married a Clarissa Crouch, a non-Quaker, in 1833 in Wayne County, Indiana. He was a Farmer and local landowner in Illinois.
Clark & Roena (Rogers) Bonine had 7 children:
In 1855 Clark & Roena Bonine moved their family from Illinois to Dallas County, Iowa, where they bought a large farm. Alas, on July 1 1856, Clark Bonine was struck by lightning during a severe thunderstorm. He died from those injuries, leaving Roena a 33-year-old widow with many small children still at home.
Marriage # 2: to widower Nathaniel P McKean, age 50: b: 1808 in Maine. Married: 12 Feb 1858 in Dallas Co., Iowa [3]
2 Children:
On the 1860 US Census, Roena McKean was recorded as 38 years old, married to 52-year-old Nathaniel McKean. They were living on the McKean farm in Spring Valley Township, Dallas County, Iowa, with the 5 youngest of Nathaniel's children by his 1st marriage and their daughter, Clarissa McKean, 2 years old. Levi McKean was born there later in 1860/61. Roena's minor-age Bonine children were recorded as a separate household, next door, headed by her oldest daughter: Delphina Bonine, 16 years old.[7]
Nathaniel McKean had a daughter, Mary Ann McKean, b. 1838, when he married Roena (Rogers) Bonine. Mary Ann McKean (whose mother was Mary Ann (McGlothlin) McKean, married Clark Bonine's son by his 1st wife: David H. Bonine, b. 1836 in Illinois, thereby cementing relations between these 2 pioneer families. Mary Ann and husband, David H. Bonine, were both buried in Violet Hill Cemetery, Perry, Dallas County, Iowa, near Roena's grave.[8][9]
Unfortunately, Roena's 2nd husband, Nathaniel Patterson McKean, passed away on 5 February 1863 at 55 years old. He was buried next to his 1st wife in Greene County, Iowa.[10] Seven years later, 1870 US Census recorded "Raena McKean," 44 years old, widow, living on the Bonine farm in Spring Valley Township, Dallas County, Iowa, with Anthony Bonine, 16 years old, her youngest son by Clark Bonine. Anthony was running the farm. Helen Foot, a 21-year-old "Housekeeper" and her 2 infant children (Clara: 2 yrs.; Silas: 3 mo.) lived with them. Helen's husband was a "Farm Laborer" on George McKean's farm next door (George McKean, age 26, was Roena (Bonine) McKean's step-son). Other members of both the Bonine and McKean families were living on neighboring farms. No 1870 Census record has been found for Clarissa or Levi McKean. [11]
Marriage # 3: to James Jamieson; married 30 Nov 1875 in Dallas County, Iowa, USA [12]
On 30 November 1875, Roena Rogers, Bonine, McKean, married her 3rd husband, James B. Jamison (aka "Jamieson"). She was 53 years old and the couple had no children together. He was 7 years older than she was and a native of Scotland. They were recorded living together in Perry, Spring Valley Township, Dallas County, Iowa, on the 1880 US Census. James was 65 years old and "RM" [sic] was 59 years old. No one else was in their household. James B. Jamison's occupation was that of "Brick & Stone Mason".[13] James B. Jamieson passed away on 1 March 1891 just a few days before his 81st birthday. He was buried at the Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, Johnson County, Iowa, USA. [14]
On the 1895 Iowa Census, widow "Roene Jemison" was recorded as 73 years old, living in her own home in Perry, Spring Valley Township, Dallas County, Iowa. She was now living with her 46-year-old unmarried son, Walter B. Bonine, a "House Carpenter". They had a 16-year-old teenage girl living with them, helping keep house.[15]
On the 1 June 1900 US Census, "Rosann Jamison," widow, age 77, was still living in Perry, Spring Valley Township, Dallas County, Iowa. Her now 51-year-old unmarried son, Walter B. Bonine, was still living with her. He was called a "Day Laborer". They were now joined by 16-year-old "Ernest McKean," listed as her "grandson," who was "in school". She owned her home, not a farm; it was on West Evelyn Street in Perry city, Iowa. The Census recorded that Roene had had 10 children; 6 of whom were still living on 1 June 1900.[16]
The last Census record where Roena appears was the 1905 Iowa State Census. There she was recorded as "Roene Jamison," an 83-year-old widow, living in her own home in Perry city, Dallas County, Iowa. She declared her birthplace had been in Warren County, Pennsylvania. She had her own income. The state census was not set up to show family members living together on the same record but Roena continued to live with her unmarried son, Walter B. Bonine, now 56 years old, until she died.[17]
Roena (Rogers) Bonine, McKean, Jamison passed away on 30 June 1908 at her home in Perry City, Spring Valley Township, Dallas County, Iowa. She was 86 years old and a 3-times a widow. [18] Roena was buried at Violet Hill Cemetery, Perry, Dallas County, Iowa, USA. Her tombstone misspells her final married name as "Jameison" when her 3rd husband's tombstone says it was "Jamieson" and their marriage, census & death records spell the name "Jamison". [19]
