Biography

Name Variations: James Rogers and Annie Winters (Rodgers/Rogers Winter/Winters found both ways)

The earliest information from Laura Alice was that William's parents were: James Rogers b 1829 Illinois d 1922 m Annie Winters b 1840 Illinois d 1924. Estimated marriage date of 1860's.

Burial Lyndon Cemetery, Lyndon KS

Combined information[1] pertaining to James and Annie supports the following Research Notes & Speculation :

  1. James Rodgers born 1838 West Virginia, --(James Find a Grave 76196453) died 1930, buried Lyndon Cemetery KS
  2. 2nd wife - Annie Winters Rogers (married James Rogers 1872 (Census) born 1855 West Virginia (Annie R Find a Grave 76196446) died 1930, buried Lyndon Cemetery KS (8 children/6 living;
  3. William's mother was probably 1st wife Elizabeth and Annie was probably step-mother;
  4. no other James/Annie found with closer dates;
  5. (JAMES probable parents appear to be William Dement Rogers and Mary Rachel Crusan).
  6. (ANNIE probable parents appear to be John & Eliza Winters; gf Daniel?)

From Kansas History,[2] it appears James was married twice and came from Marshall Co. WV. Many possibilities and many “Winters” existed in Marshall Co WV.

  1. 1850 Census in Marshall shows both a Elizabeth (1838) and Anne (1844) (Sisters - same parents John & Eliza Winters.
  2. Marriage record in WV for James and Elizabeth Winters shows (James (22) 11 Apr 1861 Elizabeth (21) DOB/Place (26 Dec 1838) -- Marshall Co - James at 22 would be b.1839; Elizabeth 1840, (it is likely the birth date given was for James not Elizabeth)
  3. 1900 Census) in KS shows James as 1838, Annie 1854 both born in WV;

While there are some birth date and place discrepancies, the most likely parents for Annie Winters appear to be John & Eliza Winters; with (two daughters):

Elizabeth married James 1861 and
Anne married James 1872.
It is likely James and Elizabeth went to Illinois and returned to WV with son(s). Two Infants died before 1869, Elizabeth died 1869 and James probably married sister Annie (married 1872 per 1880 Census).

1880 Census records indicate Annie and James with 6 children (at least 2 died before 1900.
