In 1881 the Census recorded that Joseph was living on 47 Cooper Street in Little Bolton, Lancashire, with his father, John, and two brothers; John, and James.
Joseph was 12 years old, and at school, along with his older brother 13 year old James. His father was 45 years old, and an Iron Planer, a trade which his 16 year old brother, John, followed his father into. According to the census James' mother, Mary, was still married to his father, but she was not recorded in this household.
