Biography
Mary (Roh) Schafer was a Volga German.
Mary (Roh) Schafer has German Roots.
According to family lore, Mary came to Canada from the Volga region of Russia as a young teenager, and had become too ill during the trip to continue at one point, remaining in the UK somewhere for a time. Her eyesight declined in her later years, and I remember her speaking German when she got excited without realizing she was no longer speaking English. When she was about 90 and living in a nursing home, staff had to prevent her from flipping the heavy hospital mattress regularly, as she was used to doing all her life.
