Research Notes

Update 25 November 2018

According to the 1897 Grimm census, Johannes Rohlmann was 37 that year, giving him a birth year of 1860. He is listed in family #129 with his wife, five children, and his widowed mother. None of his brothers are listed in the census, so it can be presumed that they either left the village of Grimm to live elsewhere, or they were deceased. The census gives no clues as to the identity of his father.

Most Volga Germans named one of their sons after the family's paternal father. Johannes Rohlmann had three sons: Karl, Friedrich, and Alexander. Only Friedrich matches the names of one of the Rohlmann brothers in the 1857 census. This is an anecdotal comment, but perhaps worth further investigation.

The current list of males who were old enough to father a child around 1860 are:

  • Nikolaus Rohlmann, born 1795
  • Heinrich Philipp Rohlmann, born 1818
  • Heinrich Rohlmann, born 1820, but missing from the 1857 census, possibly deceased
  • Friedrich Rohlmann, born 1824
  • Nikolaus Rohlmann, born 1829

If we eliminate Nikolaus the elder, born 1795, either too old or possibly deceased, and Heinrich, born 1829, possibly deceased, that leaves only three possible fathers: Heinrich Philipp, Friedrich, and Nikolaus the younger. They are bolded in the list above.

Johannes' father would have been born by 1843 or earlier; if he was born as late as 1843, he would have been a father at 17. That's a little young but not out of the realm of possibility. Since we now know that Johannes was born in 1860, it is clear that any of the Rohlmann sons could have been his father. They would have been between 30 and 45 at the time of Johannes' birth.
