Biography

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

Joane Rolfe, daughter of John Rolfe and Joane (Coles) Rolfe, was baptised on September 18, 1614 at Whiteparish, Wiltshire, England.[1] She was probably born earlier that year.

Marriage

Marriage: 17 Feb 1633/4 Richardus Ringe to Joane Rolph is recorded in the Landford, Wiltshire parish register. Only the Bishop's Transcripts survive for these years in Landford. [2]

His Sarum marriage license bond lists more accurate information.[3] Per that license he was born in 1608, was described as a yeoman and his home parish on 17 Feb 1633/34 was Stanton St. Bernard, Wiltshire about 30 miles from Landford where the marriage happened. Joan Rolfe (spelled also as Rolph) was 20, a spinster so not previously married and her home parish was Hampworth, Wiltshire next to Landford.

She married Richard Ring, probably in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England about 1633. Their date of marriage is based on the estimated date of birth of their first known child.

Children

Joane and Richard probably had the following children:

  • Elizabeth, b. about 1634, m. Olver Shropshire, widowed and living in England in 1668[4]
  • Isaac, b. perhaps about 1636,[5] living in England in 1668[4]
  • (possibly) Sarah, b. about 1638, m. 1st about 1660 William Cottle, m. 2d before 1688 John Hale, d. probably January 19, 1698/9. (See discussion and sources in Sarah's profile.)
  • Hester, bpt. March 22, 1639 at St. Peter and St. Paul, Marleborough, Wiltshire, England,[6] living in England in 1668[4]
  • Joseph, perhaps about 1641, living in England in 1668[4]
  • Anna, bpt. August 30, 1642[7] no later records, may have died young

No birth or baptismal records have been found for Elizabet, Isaac, Sarah or Joseph. Joane and RIchard's parentage of Isaac and Joseph is based on (i) the 1664 will of John Rolfe, Joane's father, which contains a bequest to "my Grand Children Isac Ring and Josep Ring tenn pounds a peec"[8] and (ii) a document, dated Oct. 22, 1668, referenced in "Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury" which supposedly "states that Richard Ring of Marlborough, Wilts, Old Eng., and his children, namely, Joseph Ring, Isaac Ring, his sons; and Elizabeth Shropshire, wid., and Hester Ring, his daus., claimed debts due them in New England; and Joseph Ring, the bearer, was to travel thither for himself, his father, bfor. and sisters."[9] Joane and Richard's parentage of Eiizabeth is based on the latter document.

Joane and Richard's parentage of Sarah, the wife of Richard Cottle and John Hale is less certain, but has been inferred based on (i) a bequest in John Rolfe's 1664 will "unto Sarah Cottell the wife of wllm Cottle".[8] and (ii) the 1688 will of Robert Ring, perhaps the brother of Richard Ring, which contains a bequest to: "Will. Cottle, son of Sarah, now wife of John Hale of Nb., and Joanna, dau. to said Sarah."[10] Together, these documents suggest that Sarah Cottle may have been related to both John Rolfe and Robert Ring. And the most likely way that she would have been related to both is if she was the daughter of Richard Ring and Joane Rolfe. This theory was supported by the author "OId Families of Salisbury and Amesbury," who viewed it as much more probable than both of the alternative theories.[10]

Date of Death

Joane was buried at St. Peter & St. Paul Marlborough, Wiltshire on 12 Jun 1649 as "wife of Richard Ring". Although then entry does not give her first name, there was clearly only one Richard Ring in Marlborough at the time.[11]

Richard went on to marry Ann Perl at the same church on 11 Jan 1650/51.[12]

Additional clues to her death are that she was not listed in her father's 1664 will although her sisters were (instead John Rolfe bequeathed directly to two of Joane's sons) and that she was not listed as a family member in the 1668 document referenced above although neither of these two would be considered conclusive on their own.

Actually I think I've found her burial on 12 Jun 1649 at St. Peter & St. Paul, Marlborough. Her first name is not given but it very clearly says "the wife of Richard Ring" https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/29611147?h=e557d4 is the free image sharing link and https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/61187/images/45582_263021009496_1195-00024 is the parish register image requiring a subscription. Please let me know what you think.

And another data point, Richard Ring re-married to Anne Perl at St. Peter & St. Paul on 11 Jan 1650/51 https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/29612477?h=e09cc4 (free image) and https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/61187/images/45582_263021009496_1195-00080 actual record

Thanks for maintaining this profile (not my ancestor but I happened to get interested in Daniel Ring, early New England immigrant so I'm looking at Rings). I noticed that Joan was not listed in her father's 1664 will although her 2 sisters were (by their married names). Instead John Rolfe bequeathed directly to her sons Isaac & Joseph. Obviously not conclusive but maybe another clue. There was no supplemental text on the 1675 burial of Richard Ring at St. Peter & St. Paul such as "husband of" or "widower" so his burial record seems to be no help in identifying Joan's fate. https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/29610851?h=77979f free image courtesy of ancestry.com
