Biography

Matoaka Amonute Powhatan
Jane (Rolfe) Bolling is a descendant of Pocahontas. Here is the trail.

Jane Rolfe was born 10 October 1650 at Varina Plantation, Henrico, Virginia.[citation needed]

She was the only child of Pocahontas' son, Thomas Rolfe, and the only grandchild of Pocahontas.

She married in about 1675, possibly in Petersburg, Dinwiddle, Virginia, Robert Bolling, by whom she had only one child[1], John Bolling, who was born January 27, 1677. The descendants of John Bolling are sometimes referred to as "Red Bollings" due to the Native American lineage.

Jane's exact death date is unknown, but she died shortly after her son's birth, probably at her home, Kippax Plantation, in Hopewell, Virginia. [2]

Very nice work Stephen. Thank you for sharing. Could you tweak the coding for footnotes on your blog (when I clicked footnote [5] it went nowhere because it links to a file on your computer).

Cheers, Liz

All the sources are at the bottom of the blog post. Unfortunately, I am still trying to figure out how to use blogs.

Possible Parents THOMAS ROLFE

JANE POYTHRESS?

posted by Sherry Holston
There is no evidence to support claims that her mother was named Poythress. It was a leap someone made years ago when reading a document that suggested Thomas' wife's maiden named had a "P" and a "y" in it. Modern research does not support that conclusion.

Jane's birthdate is unknown. According to Dorman's "Adventurers of Purse and Person" she was born about 1655.

Rolfe-2136 and Rolfe-54 appear to represent the same person because: same son, no sources for data on -2136

John Frederick Dorman, author/compiler of "Adventurers of Purse and Person," genealogy of the descendants of the first Jamestown settlers ("Person") and London Company investors ("Purse") through five generations. These are the lineage books used by the First Families of Virginia. They include a smaller number of people and are more rigorous than the Jamestown Descendants organization and documentation. Dorman has also compiled and published many books of early colonial Virginia county deeds and other records.

Dorman says Jane probably born c.1655, date and place unknown. Father Thomas owned land in James City and Surry Counties.

Thanks, Kathie. Who is Dorman?

I don't see a source for death date on the FindAGrave memorial.

Her son's birth on 27 Jan 1676 and "after 26 Jan" for her death is triggering a database error (DBE 310 Mother dead before birth).

Could you change "after 26 Jan" to "after 27"?

Thanks!

update: merge completed (explanation of erroneous dates is included in profile's Research Notes)

Rolfe-54 and Rolfe-1713 appear to represent the same person because: the birth year that had been given for Rolfe-1713 was in error (a misreading of a source that gave her son's birth as 27 Jan. 1676). 17 July 1709 is the death date given on the profile for Robert's 2nd wife, Anne Stith.

What proof do we have that Rolfe-1156 even existed? The PM, Martha Sparks, made 46 contributions from 26 Oct - 30 Oct 2015 and then went inactive.

Among her entries on 28 Oct: 16:11: Martha (Auxier) Sparks edited the Mother for Thomas Rolfe.

16:11: Martha (Auxier) Sparks created Matoaka (Powhatan) Rolfe.

16:10: Martha (Auxier) Sparks edited the Father for Jane Rolfe.

16:10: Martha (Auxier) Sparks created Thomas Rolfe.

16:09: Martha (Auxier) Sparks edited the Mother for John Barnett.

16:09: Martha (Auxier) Sparks created Jane Rolfe.

16:08: Martha (Auxier) Sparks edited the Father for Jesse Barnett.
