Jose was born in 1831. He is the son of Jose Francisco Romero and Maria del Carmen Sena.

- In 1850, Jose Romero, age 15, a laborer, lived in Santa Fe, Santa Fe, New Mexico Territory, with his father, Francisco Romero, age 35, a farmer; and with his mother, Simona Romero, age 25; and with Jose's siblings: Refugio Romero, age 12; Juan Romero, age 7; and Sista Romero, age 2.[1]
