Arrival: Voyage Date: 20 January 1836 to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the ship Elphinstone which arrived 24 May, 1836 Van Diemen's Land: he is Jose Maria Romero in the convict list for this ship. He is age 27 in Van Diemen's Land Convict Description book which also has a note 'St Jago' (probably referring to part of Spanish Town, on the Island of Jamaica).
Marriage to Maria Vearing (1815–1857) 5 Nov 1852 • Adelaide, South Australia, Australia: Joseph Romaro and Maria Vearing at Trinity Church Adelaide by licence. Joseph was age '32', bachelor, bricklayer. Maria was 33, 'spinster'. Witnesses were Thomas Vearing and Maria Vearing.[3] Jose and Maria had been living together from 1847 or earlier, as their first child Thomas Joseph was born 22 March 1848 in Adelaide. Maria's previous (de facto) partner was Thomas Thomson and their surviving child Frances was baptised with Romaro's name in 1848. [Jackson]
Jose and Maria had two children at Forest Creek/Castlemaine: Sarah Maria born 1855, died 1856, and Angelica, born 1857 who died the same year. On 3 November 1857, Maria Romaro died at Forest Creek.[Jackson]
Marriage to Elizabeth Middleton (1833–1919) 2 Apr 1859 • Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia: at the parish church. Jose Romaro widower Sep 1857 with two children, Bricklayer age '35' of Forest Creek, birth place is Venezuela South America, parents Antonio Romaro (horse breaker) and Velci Ascunio[?]. Elizabeth Middleton, spinster, 26, of Barkers Creek, born Yorkshire parents Thomas Middleton (cloth dresser) and Elizabeth Cowling. Jose and Elizabeth both signed the register.[4]
Death 10 April 1883 • at District Hospital, Maryborough, Victoria, Australia: Death certificate: Jose Romaro, a stonemason, aged 56, cause of death Enlarged prostate and uremia 8 days, born in South America, parents Antoni Romaro and Melsie Romaro formerly Arscani [?], spending 4 [?] years in Adelaide and 35 years in Victoria, his first marriage at age 20, had been to Maria 'Thompson', issue Sarah Ann and Angelica, both dead; his second marriage at age 32, to Elizabeth Middleton, issue Emma Elizabeth 23 and Louis Alfred 20. Informant was Robert Maxwell[?] wardsman at the hospital. Burial 11 April 1893 Maryborough Cemetery.[5]
His son Thomas Joseph Romaro may be the same child as Thomas Vearing Thomson born 1847 Adelaide, same mother (Maria Vearing) but different father (Thomas Thomson).
