Biography

John Romines was born about 1833. He was married to Rebecca J. Newman in 1857.[1]

Romines enlisted in the Union army's 3rd Tennessee Cavalry in September 1863. A year later, he and many others of his regiment were captured by the Confederates at the Battle of Sulphur Creek Trestle and held at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Toward the end of the war, Romines was among the paroled prisoners being transported aboard the steamer Sultana when it exploded north of Memphis. He was killed in the disaster.[2]

He was survived by his wife Rebecca, and three children: Sarah, Emeline, and George.[3]
