Biography

Asa was born 28 Jul 1763 in Lebanon, Connecticut. [1]

He was the son of Jeremiah Rood and Hannah Briggs. [2] Hannah Briggs Grover was the daughter of James Briggs.

He died before his brother Joseph filed for a Revolutionary War pension on 27 Oct 1838.[3]

Research Notes

It is not probable that he is the same Asa Rood who applied for a Revolutionary War pension in 1818 at age 68 in Broome County. He would have only been age 55 in 1818. This means that he is probably not the Asa who settled in Broome County with his son Asa. Unless the age in the pension application was incorrect.

Also, based on his brother Joseph's Revolutionary War pension application, he was not fighting in the war between April 1775 and February 1776, when Joseph said he was "crazy", becoming rational again in February 1776.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Asa by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Asa:

There is no Freehold, Mass. There is a Freehold in New Jersey and one in New York. It could be possible that Asa traveled from either place to settle in Kirkwood in Broome County. Further research is needed to determine if this Asa is the father of Asa Jr

Additional research needed to confirm that he was the father of Asa. Another Asa son of Rufus and Sarah was born 1762 and another Asa son of Rufus and Abigail b 1744.

Per history of Broome County (FS cat # 264970) Asa, father of Asa moved from Freehold, Mass.
