Biography

John Rood was born in Hadley, Massachusetts, on 4 June 1770, a son of Simeon and Ruth Rood.[1]

He lived as an adult in Brookfield and Williamstown, Vermont. He was married to Judith, who died in 1839.

John Rood of Hadley, Massachusetts, and Judith Taylor of Granby, Massachusetts, entered their intentions of marriage in Hadley, Massachusetts, on 11 November 1792.[2] They were married by Rev. B. Chapman at Granby, Massachusetts, on 29 November 1792.[3]

The 1840 U.S. Census recorded John Rood in Williamstown, Vermont. The household consisted of five free white persons: one male age 70 to 79 (John), one female 30 to 39 (probably his daughter Judith), one male and one female age 20 to 29, and one female age 15 to 19. Two household members, presumably the two males, were engaged in agriculture.[4]

The 1850 Census recorded farmer John Rood, 79 years old and born in Massachusetts, in Williamstown, Vermont, sharing his household with Judith Rood, age 44 (his daughter).[5] His wife Judith had died in 1839 in Brookfield, Vermont.

Death

There is conflicting information regarding the date of John Rood's death. According to Brookfield vital records, John Rood died in Brookfield, Vermont, on 12 January 1862, at the reported age of 82, and was buried in Brookfield Center Cemetery.[6] The town death card identifies him as the husband of Judith Rood.[7] This age, indicating birth in about 1780, is inconsistent with the age recorded for him in the 1850 census, as well as the dates of his marriage and the births of his children. A Findagrave memorial for him (no gravestone) shows his death date as 12 January 1852, based on a typed list that may be a list of burials, and it indicates that he is buried in East Brookfield Cemetery in East Brookfield. [8] Another Findagrave memorial is illustrated by a gravestone indicated to be in Brookfield [Center] Cemetery, inscribed "John Rood, died Jan. 12, [year almost completely obscured]." The memorial indicates a death year of 1862, but this cannot be ascertained from the photograph of the stone.[9] The 1852 death year probably is correct; the 1862 date may be a transcription error, and it is possible that it is the basis for the year shown on the Findagrave memorial from Brookfield [Center] Cemetery.
