Matthew M. Root died before 1900 because Sophia is listed as widowed in this census.

A probate notice from May 1860 lists Matthew M. Root as the guardian of the minor heirs of Isaac Cutler, deceased. ^[1]

A nephew, Willie Crowell, is in the household in the 1870 and 1880 census.
