Biography

Chapman Jay Root was born on 22 November 1864 at Pennsylvania to his parents Jay C. Root and Mary J. Wood. He married Ellen Agnes Ruffle, daughter of William Ruffle and Sarah A. Ruffle, on 12 July 1886 at Portage, Ohio^[1]. They had the following children: William Ruffle Root. In 1900, he lived in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana with his wife Ellen dA Root and a servant, Nellie King. In 1901, Root founded the Root Glass Company, which later designed and patented the Coca-Cola bottle. In 1910, he lived in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana with his wife Ellen A Root, their son William R. Root and a servant, Goldie Smith^[2]. In 1920, he lived in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana with his wife Eleanor Root, their son, William R. Root and two servants, Richard Co and Georgia Cox^[3]. In 1924, he lived in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana as pres Root Glass Co, at h 1224 S 6th^[4]. In 1930, He lived in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana with his wife Ella A Root and two servants, Richard Cox and Georgia Cox^[5]. In 1931, he lived in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana at 1224 S. 6th with his wife Ellen, and Chapman was listed as President of the Root Glass Company^[6]. In 1936, he lived in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana at h1224 S. 6th with his wife Ellen^[7]. In 1937-`38, he lived in Terre Haute, Vigo County, in Indiana with his wife at Root, Chapman J (Ellen A) h1224 S. 6th^[8]. In 1939, he lived in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana as President of Root Glass Co, h 1224 S. 6th with his wife Ellen^[9]. In 1940, he lived in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana at 1224 South 8th Street, with his wife Ellen A Root and Nice Edwards, a servant^[10][11]. In 1942, he lived in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana at mgr h1224 S. 6th, with his wife Ellen^[12]. In 1944, he lived in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana at Root, Chapman J h1224 S 6th^[13]. He died on 20 November 1945 at Vigo County, Indiana^[14][15][16]. He is buried at Highland Lawn Cemetery Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana.^[17]
