Henry G. Root was the 8th of 9 children born to Dr. Enoch and Mary (Johnson) Root in Ohio (probably Trumbull County). He was married briefly to Aurilla Dean, and in 1859 married Sarah Jane Wolcott. Their first daughter, Luella, was born in Ohio. They joined the westward migration and, in the early 1870's, settled in Kansas, where Luella died; she is buried next to her parents. Shortly thereafter they went to Minnesota, where William and Carrie were born. By 1875 they were back in Cloud County, Kansas north of Delphos. Carrie died, but her burial location is unknown. They then moved back to Ottawa County, Kansas, where he farmed until at least 1895. Henry and Sarah next moved to LaPorte, Texas where Henry died; his body was returned to Minneapolis for burial.
