Biography

NOTE: Thomas Roper son of Daniel Roper and Sophia Sylvis at age 25 married Elizabeth Westacott on March 16, 1852. Her parents are Samuel Westacott and Mary Garneau. Samuel Westacott died 1860 age 65 years. Thomas and Elizabeth had 3 sons and 1 daughter. Marian Margaret Roper and John Wesley Roper and William Roper and Thomas Dennis Roper. Thomas Roper sold his property in St. Peter's Bay as he wanted to move to the western states. Thomas Roper's son, John Wesley Roper married Mary Susan Myers who was born in California.

NOTE: An Island Refugee: "Daniel Roper: Daniel, junior, was born before 1792 and married Sophia Sylvis from Murray Harbour in 1813 at Saint Paul's Church of England in Charlottetown. On August 24, 1818 Daniel was listed as a ship's carpenter. He was granted a Lot in Charlottetown and a pasture lot in Charlottetown Royalty. They moved to St. Peter's Bay where Daniel eventually acquired one hundred and eighty five acres of land and gristmill. They had several children:

A. Sophia was born in 1814. In 1838 she married John Hapleton.

B. Thomas was born in 1827. On March 16, 1852 he married Elizabeth Westacott, daughter of Samuel Westacott. They had one daughter, Marion Margaret, born on December 04, 1852. Thomas operated a mill at St. Peters, Lot 39 and on January 1, 1857 he sold this property to T. DesBrisay, and moved to Iowa where he died of a fever on June 22, 1863 at Baton Rouge. He left a widow and one daughter." [Thomas and Elizabeth also had 3 sons]

Note: Newport cottage was the home of Samuel and Mary Westacott.

Smallwood, Mr. Thomas Burnett, of Charlottetown, to Matilda, eldest daughter of Samuel Westacott. At the same time, by the Rev. J. R. Narraway, Mr. Thomas Roper of St. Peter’s, to Eliza, second daughter of Mr. Samuel Westacott.” Hazards Gazette Mar 16, 1852”

When she died} he went to the states and enlisted in the American Army. No other information available.

Note: Century of Immigration: Westacott, Richard At Stanton Hospital, Washington, D.C., from wounds received in the Battle of Fredericksburg, in December last, Mr. Richard Westacott, Co. F. 19th Mass. Regiment. The deceased was the youngest son of the late Mr. Samuel Westacott, St. Peter’s Road.
