Biography

Henry Roscoe FRS was born in England.

Henry attended Liverpool Institute for Boys and University College London. He worked with Robert Bunsen in Heidelberg. In 1857 he was made Chair of Chemistry at Owens College Manchester. He was MP for Manchester South from 1885-1895 and Vice Chancellor of the University of London from 1896-1902.

His work with Robert Bunsen included an experiment considered to be the first flashlight photography in 1864, using magnesium. Henry also worked on the chemical vanadium and its compounds. The mineral Roscoelite was named after him.

He was knighted in 1884 and received an honorary award from the University of Glasgow in 1901. Henry died in 1915 and is buried in Brookwood Cemetery, Woking, Surrey, England. There is an English Heritage blue plaque to Henry and Sir Edward Frankland in Quay Street, Manchester.
