George was the first child of Kindred and Nancy Rose, born west of Curryville, Missouri. He was 16 when his father died, and he took on "the burden of the household.." He did not marry until 1896, when he met Ada Sutton, a nineteen year old teacher who "caught George's eye one morning as he passed on horseback." They moved to Curryville in 1901 and "George bought out the blacksmithing business of John Frankum." Later he expanded into "sales and service of farm machinery," bought the "agency for Dodge cars and about 1916 became the agent for International Harvester products." He is described by his son as "of average build, except for his extraordinary arms and shoulders which would have seemed to belong to a man of much greater size....one of his cousins who survived him remarked one day that 'had there been professional baseball in [his] youth, he would have been a major league pitcher, for he could throw harder and more accurately than any fellow I have ever known.' He and Ada are buried in Curryville Community Cemetery.
