Killed on the ship Lawrence[2][3]She was commissioned in early August 1813, named in honor of Captain James Lawrence who had died June 4, 1813, in a famous battle with HMS Shannon. Lawrence quickly began operations with a voyage to Detroit, Michigan, in search of the opposing British squadron. During the 10 September 1813 Battle of Lake Erie, Lawrence served as flagship for Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry until she was disabled by enemy fire. In the name of God Amen, I Allen Rose of the Township and County of Bedford, in the State of Pennsylvania, being weak in body, but of sound mind, memory and understanding, (blessed be God for the same) and considering the uncertainty of this transitory life, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following to Wit:
Principally and first of all, I commend my immortal soul into the hands of God who gave it and my Body to the Earth; to be buried in a decent Christian like manner at the direction of my Executors herein after mentioned and as to such word by Estate, wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life, I give and dispose of the same in this following manner, to Wit:
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Rachel, her feather bed and bed clothes, and all the cattle called by her name for hers.
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Ann her feather bed and bed clothes, and a cow out of my stock to the value of five pounds.
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary, her feather bed and bed clothes, and a cow out of my stock to the value of five pounds, and I give and bequeath to each of my three daughters, their spinning wheels and the whole of my paster ? to be equally divided between them.
I give and bequeath to my son Edward my black mare,
I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel the colt of the said black mare, and as touching all the rest residue and remainder of my Estate real and personal, of what kind and nature soever they may be,
I give and devise unto my several sons, to be as equally divided, among them as may be in manner following, to Wit: my son William to have a half part of my land, wherein he now lives, to be divided by the dug hill run - my sons, Edward and Samuel to have that residue of my land, where I now live, jointly between them and that my Executors herein after named, at any convenient time after my decease, shall chose two or more honest and discreat men, who shall value and appraise all the said residue and remainder of my Estate, the part wherein my son William lives separate, and the part where on I now live separate, for Edward and Samuel aforesaid, and that William shall have the refusal of his part, for the value put on the same at cash price; and Edward and Samuel , shall have the refusal of their part jointly, for the value put thereon at cash price, and then that cash of them Viz, William, Edward and Samuel shall pay a proportional share to the other gatees? Viz" Thomas, Allen, John and Arthur, allowing my said three sons - Viz" William, Edward and Samuel, a reasonable time to make the payments to my other sons, Viz" Thomas, Allen, John and Arthur - And the residue of my personal Estate value and appraised as aforesaid at Cash price, shall be divided as near as may be into Seven Shares, and each of my Sons
- to Wit - William, Allen, Thomas, John, Edward, Samuel and Arthur shall have one of those shares, in manner as may be alloted to them and further that the share of my youngest son Arthur, shall be thereon in and to, the shares of my sons Edward and Samuel and remain in their hands until my Son Arthur arrives to the age of twenty one years, at which time they the said Edward and Samuel, shall jointly pay each unto the said Arthur his full share, and further
I desire and give my Executors herein after named power to bind unto my youngest son Arthur, aforesaid the some good trade of his own chosing, at the affixition of two or three years hence.
And lastly, I constitute, nominate and appoint my brother-in-law, John Kinton, my sons William Rose and Edward Rose, to be the Executors of this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all other wills, legacies, bequeaths, by me heretofore made, and declaring this and no other, to be my last Will and testament.
For witness wherefor I have hereunto set my hand and seal, the thirteenth day o f September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and three,
Signed, sealed, published, pronounced and declared by the said testator as his last Will and Testament, in the presence of us, who in his presence and at his request have subscribed as witnesses. Thomas Vickroy William Drenning Allen Rose Samuel Rose granted 11th day of November A. D. 1805
