Biography

This profile is part of the Ross Name Study.

The Rev. Robert Rose of Virginia is well documented. There is a large published book giving many of his descendants and a brief ancestry.[1] His diary,[2] with annotations, is extant, as is his Bible.[3]

Robert Rose was born in Wester Alves, Scotland on Feb 12, 1704 to John Rose and Margaret Grant.[4]

Robert first married Mary Tarrant and had three children. He later married Anne Fitzhugh and had 6 children. He died June 30, 1751 in Richmond, Virginia, USA. From notations in his Bible,[3] quoted on pages 17 and 38 of ref [1] and p. 106 of ref [2] .

Further evidence for his connection to Scotland and the line of Rose of Bellivat,[5] cadet to Rose of Kilravock, lies in the name, Bellevette, of the home on the Tye River in the current Nelson Co. VA, of his son Charles (b. Aug 17, 1747 per his Bible,[3] and St. Paul's Parish Register, p. 116, both quoted in [1] p. 65, photo of home p. 67, and discussion in [3] p.183). Bellevette is still standing, seen from the air by the current writer. The Rose family of Virginia claimed descent from the Roses of Bellivat in Nairnshire. Bellivat is on the A939 highway just south of Redburn. The Roses of Bellivat appear in many land records [6] and even more (criminal) court proceedings,

Children by his first wife: Mary (d. age 14), John, and Robert (d. infancy).

Children by his second wife: Henry, Hugh, Patrick, Charles, Susannah, and Margaret. [1] p. 38.

The Rev. Rose is buried outside an east window of St. John's, the first church in Richmond, VA, the first person buried in that churchyard [2] (p. 106) Patrick Henry later made his famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech[7] from this church, overlooking his grave.

Though outside the date range of Wikitree's Magna Carta Project the Rev. Rose is in fact descendant of Magna Carta Barons Hugh Bigod, Gilbert de Clare, and Saher de Quincy as well as numerous royal ancestors such as Edward III of England and Robert Stewart III of Scotland.

DNA Evidence

Y-chromosome DNA tests [8] show that Col. Murray Rose of VA, descendant [1] (p. 235) of Rev. Robert Rose's son Charles (see above) who descends from the 8th Laird of Kilravock, plus another person who descends from the same son matches the DNA of a Canadian descendant (shown there, 10-14 at DYS385 but who wishes to remain anonymous)[9] of the 11th Laird of Kilravock at exactly the expected difference. This is exceeding strong confirmation of the continuity of the line of Bellivat in Scotland.

Two male descendants are participants in the Ross Surname Project at Family Tree DNA.

They are on this MRCA (Most Recent Common Ancestor) chart.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:

Robert Rose is outside the scope of the Magna Carta Project, so I have removed the Project information from the profile, and removed the Project from profile management.

Mr. Cayley: was Rose-6077 removed from the Magna Carta Project for an actual mistake in the evidence presented in the profiles, which is primarily primary for the first several profiles, in the line back to people actually in Richardson, or simply becasue he is not listed in Richardson's Magna Carta books (because he was born in 1704)? He was installed in the project specifically on the basis of evidence leading back to John Stewart and John Stewart who are in Richardson.
posted by James McDonald
The reason for the removal is that he is outside the scope of the Project, which has a cut-off date of 1700: Gateways who emigrated to America after that date are not within the scope of the Project.

Hello, I've started a G2G thread on whether Rev. Robert Rose and others should be recognized as Gateway Ancestors: http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/154895/magna-carta-project-new-gateway-ancestors?show=154916#a154916
