Biography

Louisa Roser was born on 15 September 1886 at Pittsworth in the Colony of Queensland.^[1] Louise's baptism record says she was born at Beauaraba and baptised on 15 February 1887; her sponsor was Louise Balzer.^[2] Pittsworth began as a wayside hotel and was known as Beauaraba formally until 1915, with gazettes as early as 1903 stating 'Pittsworth, formerly Beauarba'.^[3]

Her parents, Henry Roser^[1] (aka Heinrich^[2]) and Elizabeth Hess, registered her birth in country Queensland in 1886.^[4] Louisa was the niece of Anthony Roser and his wife, Eliza Agnes Roser; Anthony was her father's brother.^[1]

Louise Balzer, Louisa's baptismal sponsor, was her cousin because she was the daughter of Johann Balzer and Dorothea Roesner^[1] (misspelt should be Roser), the sister of Louise's father, Henry Roser. Louise Balzer was also the sister-in-law of Louise's mother, because Louise Balzer's sister, Anna Margaretha Balzer, married Elizabeth's brother, Henry Hess.^[2] The year after Louisa's baptism, her sponsor Louise became her aunt when she married William Hess, the brother of her mother.^[2]

In 1902, Louisa worked for six months for Mrs Margaret Corcoran, wife of John Corcoran, licensee of the Harp of Erin Hotel, Helidon, Queensland; her father and step-mother drew her wages.^[1] She was at Mrs Corcoran's again in 1904, because her step-mother was always scolding her.^[1]

On 9 September 1904, Louisa gave birth to a daughter, Ethel May, at the home of her aunt, Eliza Agnes Roser, at Granite Ridge, Texas, Queensland.^[1]

In July 1905, Louisa Roser resided at Gatton.^[1]

Louisa Roser's marriage to Ernest Shepherd was registered in Brisbane, Queensland, in 1907.^[5]
