William was born in 1759, probably in the area of Sutherland, Scotland. He came to America in 1772 and was living in Washington, Pennsylvania as early as 1787 when he shows up in a tax record three.[1].
William Ross passed away in 1819.
He also appears in the 1790[2] and 1810[3] censuses.
He married Jane McCoy who also immigrated in 1772, and they were the parents of Alexander, Jane, John, Kenneth, Thomas, Catherine and Charlotte Ross.
Research Notes
I have seen this William Ross linked in multiple places on the internet as the son of Major William Ross (b. 16 Jul 1727 in Tain, Rosshire, Scotland and came to America with the 42nd "Highlandesr" commanded by Sir Hugh Montgomery.) But this appears to be impossible, as [Colonial Families of the USA 1607-1775, p. 389] indicates that the William Ross, Jr. that family (who would be the man in this profile) married Catherine Worthington of Frederick, Maryland in 1806. Our William and his family were living in Washington Co., Pennsylvania at that time.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
