Isabella (Ross) Gilbert was born in India

Isabella Rose Ross was born in India and baptised on 8 October 1794. She was the daughter of Captain Thomas Ross (who was deceased at the time of her baptism as can be seen on the original image) and his wife Isabella. On the British India Office Ecclesiastical returns her first name is recorded as Ross as well as her surname.^[1]

She married Walter Raleigh Gilbert in 1814. The marriage took place in Calcutta on 1 June.^[2] Interestingly the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography records her father with the rank of Major.^[3]

The couple had three children:

• Francis Hastings Gilbert (1816 - 1863)^[4]
• Geraldine Adelaide Elizabeth (Gilbert) Colt (1817 - 1908)^[4]
• Flora Anne (Gilbert) Shubrick (1818 - 1894)^[5]

Lady Isabella Rose Gilbert died aged 72 on January 18, 1869 in Twickenham Villa Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England. ^[6][7]
