Born in Edinburgh where his father was a minister, Neil moved to Laggan, Invernesshire age 8. He moved back to Edinburgh to attend university aged 16. After a year on a Colonial Service training in Cambridge, he moved to Ghana (then the Gold Coast) where he ultimately became a District Commissioner. In 1947 he moved back to Edinburgh and was a solicitor and businessman there for the rest of his life. He attended George Watsons school in Edinburgh, Laggan primary school and Kingussie High School - awarded a gold medal for being Dux of the school. He first read Classics at University, switching to Economics. He then read Law after his return in 1947 while a father of a young family, later becoming Town Clerk of South Queensferry. He was a lovely, kind father who had a gigantic library of books and an enormous range of knowledge.
