Biography
Leon was born 1 February 1927 in Guilford County, North Carolina, the son of Toillman J. Ross and Annie Jane Pitchford.[1] He was the husband of Audrey Mae Rigdon. In 1930[2] and 1940,[3] Leon was living with his parents and siblings in Greensboro, Guilford County, where his father was an overseer in a cotton mill.

Leon was a overseas veteran of the United States Navy during World War II. He enlisted on 1 March 1944 and served aboard the LST 916. Leon was honorable discharged on 23 May 1946 at Shelton, Virginia. Included in his $103.95 final pay was $13.35 for travel to home in Greensboro. Leon's preference for additional training upon separation was to finish high school (he had only completed two years of high school prior to enlistment).[4]
Leon was a mechanical contractor in the heating and air conditioning industry. He died of a heart attack on 25 March 1993 at his home in Mebane, Alamance County, North Carolina,[5] and was buried beside his wife (who had predeceased him by less than a year) in the Blue Ridge Gardens of Memory in Transylvania County, North Carolina.[6]
