Lieutenant Daniel Ross Sr. served with Henry County Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

Daniel Ross Sr. is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A098289.

Military Service Daniel was a Second Lieutenant in Captain Owen Rubell's Company of Henry County in the Virginia Recognized by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and of the Daughters of the American Revolution.[5]Daniel took the Oath of Allegiance in Henry Co., VA on 31 October 1777 and 19 January 1778.

Daniel was born in 1740 Scotland to Roderick Ross and Helen Reid.[1]Daniel arrived Baltimore, Maryland about 1760 along with his parents.[2]

Daniel Ross, Sr. was the youngest of three brothers who settled in Virginia about the middle of the 18th Century. In 1765 he married Elizabeth Rose "Betty" Garth, daughter of John Garth, Sr. of Spotsylvania and Orange Counties, Virginia, but who had for a number of years been a resident of Louisa, VA. At a court held for Henry County in June 1780, Daniel Ross was appointed 2nd. Lt. under O. Rubell in the Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War,[3]. He not only served in the army during the war but rendered further assistance in the struggle for liberty by furnishing beef, corn and diets for the army. During the first half century of the colonization of Virginia, the Rosses made their appearance and continued to migrate, hence even as late as the Revolutionary War Time, for we find that the Council was petitioned to permit them to take up residence here at that time.[4]

Daniel was a Second Lieutenant in Captain Owen Rubell's Company of Henry County in the Virginia Recognized by the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and of the Daughters of the American Revolution.[5]Daniel took the Oath of Allegiance in Henry Co., VA on 31 October 1777 and 19 January 1778.[6]

Daniel Ross passed away in November 1822. The Find A Grave page shows a drawing of Daniel and tombstone. The Ross Harbour Cemetery in Elamsville, Patrick Co., Virginia has a memorial headstone for Daniel and wife Elizabeth. He was not buried at this site. There was a Memorial placed there in his honor, years after his death, but he was actually buried in Cooper County, Missouri where he died in 1822[7]

Excerpt from My Henry County "The Ross family has been living in this area since 1776, just before the time when Henry County was formed in January 1777. Daniel Ross, Sr. had moved to Henry County from Amherst where he served in the Henry County militia throughout the Revolutionary War. He was appointed an Ensign, then a 2nd Lieutenant, then a Lieutenant on September 28, 1780. Daniel owned land on both sides of the Smith River, but from deeds and tax records his actual residence was on the north side of the Smith. He lived in the part of Henry County that would split off and become Franklin County in 1786, but some of his land south of the Smith fell into that portion of Henry that would become Patrick County in 1790. Daniel and his wife, Elizabeth Garth through whose family he met and had dealings with Thomas Jefferson, and their family lived in this Henry/Franklin/Patrick area until he, Elizabeth and their son Churchill moved to Henry County, Kentucky in 1811/1812. Some of their children moved to Tennessee, Kentucky and to Cooper County, Missouri where Daniel died and was buried in 1821/1822."

Research Notes

There is another entry on WIkitree of a Daniel Ross born not in Scotland the country but in Scottland the city, Windham Co., Connecticut born on June 26, 1736 - could this be the same person? My source speculates but is not certain this Daniel is the same one born in Ross-shire, Scotland. There is on record in Scotland on the Parish registers - Cromarty Parish the birth of Daniel Ross, 9 Nov. 1740, son of Roderick Ross and Helen Ross in the Hill - of which it is said that this Daniel was the first of his line to come to Virginia. Although the author of my source writes that the names of this Daniel is not continued by his children and not seen proof that he was the same Daniel of Louisa County of which my line is related to. - Timothy Garth 10:13, 9 June 2015 (EST)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Daniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Daniel:

Ross-5905 and Ross-2530 appear to represent the same person because: I would like to merge these two profiles. Although there is a disagreement between the father of Daniel Ross, I believe we can come to an agreement how the profile should read.

Ross-5905 and Ross-2530 do not represent the same person because: More research is needed before choosing which set of parents are correct.

Ross-8146 and Ross-2530 appear to represent the same person because: Oops, looks like we have duplicates. Parents are speculative and he died in Missouri, not Maryland. But these are the same person and should be merged.
