Robert married Mariah Belle (Ross) DeBertz (abt.1865-1942) 28 Dec 1886 in Greenwood County, Kansas[3] While they both had the same last name before they married, the family tradition has claimed they were not related because Robert was from Ohio and Belle was from Illinois. Very little information about Robert's family was passed down, none of it about his mother.
Recent research has uncovered his mother was Belle's aunt, Phebe Lease. Robert was born after Belle's family left Ohio, and they may not have known at the time they were married, or even realized in their lifetime that they were first cousins.
Robert and Belle were divorced in El Paso, Colorado in 1915.[4]
Who are Robert's parents? Robert's death certificate says David Ross and Phebe Lease are his parents. On the 1870 census you see there is a 15 year gap between him and his sister, Harriet. On the 1860 census for David & Phebe they have another daughter, Mary who was 3 years older than Harriet and is no longer living at home. Either girl may have been Robert's biological mother, leaving him to be raised by his grandparents.
Who is Hattie? Robert spent his later years with a woman named Hattie.[8][9] There is a marriage on 23 Apr 1906 in Denver, CO to Hettie Kling.[6] (She was married to Conrad Kling, her maiden name was Rose and she was born in virginia). There is also a record of a marriage[10][11] with Hattie prior to Robert and Belle's marriage. Trying to figure out if they are the same person, or if one of the marriages was a different Robert and Hattie.
Are Robert from Kansas and Robert from Ohio one and the same? In my mother's research notes on Robert there are two addresses for him where his children by Belle were in contact. The last known address, in Dayton, Ohio circa 1940 matches the street address where Robert and Hattie were recorded on the 1930 census.
